What's new

Dennis Schroeder-PG Germany about to blow up!

Everything NAOS has said, and I'll raise it by saying to basically gut the team of veterans, use the draft to stash picks, ensure Ty is gone AND the Jazz have a good pick in 2014. Have it all come together from that point on.

The Jazz have hinted towards going young. Rigby did an interview that made it sound like that was the most likely scenario, but he left it open that there are all kinds of routes and options the Jazz can take because of the flexibility they have.

Hey, I just spotted this discussion about Schröder. Being familiar with the German league and his play tho I'm not a regular supporter of his homeclub I thought why not share my knowledge about his situation and play with you guys, since you seem to be frontrunners to secure his service this summer.
Starting off it must be said Schröder has 1 more year on his current contract in Braunschweig and it is not known if he has a NBA out clause in it. Otherwise the Jazz would have to negotiate a buy-out, but his team seems willing to let him go in general.

One thing I'd say about his play is that he is an energy guy. Playing very relentless. Not one of those guys who's getting mad when his team is behind and starts playing for his own statsheet. That's what i liked when i watched him play live. Add to that generally good decision making most of the time, especially for a 19 yr old. Playing vs grown up Pros, he does get outsmarted on very rare occasions. His high amount of turnovers is result of refereeing in Germany(Allowance of very physical play most times), where his narrow frame and low weight doesnt really favor him. Rest of the turnovers are result of ballhandling issues i think. You have seen in the World select vs USA Highschool game in the end, that he didnt playas controlled as in the first half when Team USA double teamed while playing full court press. But he seemed to be way ahead of the Harrison guy in his development, who had several plays which showed lack of experience and maturity.
Under FIBA rules, Schröder has of course a lot of experience running Pick & Roll Sets, which was also visible in the game. Jazz Scouts will probably take that into consideration. Especially with Kanter he should provide a good pair I assume. Dont know how well Millsap and Favors move after Ball screens, but I know Kanter's play from international play.
In the german league I liked Isolations from Schröder. He often opts for Iso plays after the opposite Team switches a Pick & Roll and he finds himself guarded by a Forward or Center on the wing. I liked his Step back and hesitation moves even if still inconsisitent on his shot, he showed good skills to create space on these occasions and has the ability to find the better positioned teammate if getting double teamed.

When deciding if it's best to leave him 1 more yr in germany or get him over asap, that's not an easy question. I think he should play Summerleague and then a decision must be made if he's ready or not. Because i expect him to play some D-League at least in his rookie year. But in case he's not quite there yet, I think the german league would be better over the course of a year compared to playing exclusively D-League as the german league is of higher quality compared to D-League mostly(Last year Pelicans backup PG Brian Roberts and Suns F P.J. Tucker were amongst the strongest player in the german league and others have been College Standouts in their youth too, but posess too exploitable deficits on their body or their game to make the jump).
In favor of coming over is certainly the aspect that most player who move to the States gain muscle one way or the other ;) And Schröder definately needs a couple of summers in the gym to shape his frame. Additionally, he'll prolly shine way more in D-League than in germany due to his game working better with NBA ruling and you got a difficult decision over hope that he's ready for the NBA, shaping his body and letting him work with NBA coaches or letting him gain experience, maturity and confidence another year in germany.

One guy asked why he declared 2013 if he's eventually coming over in 2014:
He'll probably be picked in the first round in either draft, but this year he will get picked way higher -> Smart business decision. I dont think any team doesn't realize that he's a long term project and even though it's more likely that he'll find his way into the league neither in his Rookie nor his Sophomore year, no team wants to risk getting into a Omer Asik poison pill contract war if he's against expectations solid early in his career.
His upside will be intriguing enough for scouts and GM's regardless of needs to not let him drop to the 2nd round.

Will the Jazz “skew young” this summer?
Well, I think we’re going to, I think it’s right now a little too early to say that. I think that’s definitely an option that we’re looking at. I think the key thing is, is what we’ve built towards, for Kevin [O'Connor], and for Dennis [Lindsey], is what we’re gonna work, is we’re gonna really hold on.

And that is, we’ve put ourselves in a very good situation to be very flexible and have a lot of options. And I, so I think we need to now look and see what those options will allow us to do. And we’re not going to spend, take the money that we have worked so hard to be in a position to use, and use it unwisely.

If there’s opportunities, we might look at those. If the opportunities aren’t the right opportunities for us, which means we continue to build on, just totally on, being young, we may opt to go in that direction.

Because we’re committed to really making the right moves that’s going to allow us the ability to build, in the right way, towards a long-term championship-caliber team. And we really want that. And I want to say “long term” meaning that they have a long chance of being able to compete as a, for a championship

Bring him over, and lets start the journey now. Next year could be so fun.

Just saw Tomic play on German TV here. Loved how his game has finally developed. Bring over Ante too!
He played against a huge football looking C, and held his own. Passed well out of the post, and actually used his
size to his advantage. Definitely different that the last time I saw him a couple of years ago.

'13-'14 will be the year of The Four. '14-'15 will be the year of The Eight (Andrew Harrison, Schroeder, Adetokunbo, Tomic).

Certainly could happen.

We'd be super fun to watch... especially with a solid coach.

Corbin would have to ****ting bricks if we ended up with a top 5 pick next year. Expectations would skyrocket.
He would likely prefer to just get mid-round picks and remain mediocre and keep cashing dem chacks.

I would MUCH rather have Harrison to Schro.. but I agree that IF we had Schro... I'd be tempted to take Jabari over AH.

OK... I agree... then how about:

Harrison + McCollum VS Jabari + Schroeder ??

I'd still take the latter...
