Tomic shouldn't be used as trade-bait. Makes so much sense for him to get a decent, short contract with the Jazz for all parties.
Makes you think: if Tomic was playing like this, and he wasn't drafted yet, where would he get drafted in the 2013 NBA draft?

2. I highly doubt you or anybody else on this board can say what Sabonis' trade value was.

Yeah, but didn't someone say that his buyout was 7 million dollars? So we are going to drop 7 million upfront on a buyout, then drop another 4-6 million on the 1st year of his contract? Does he even want to come over right now?

^ Not exactly sure, thats why I'm throwing that question out there. If he wins Euroleague MVP (probable) and his team wins the championship (also probably-- team went 13-1 in February, winning in hostile environments like Tel-Aviv and Fene-Ulker), then we essentially have a Tiago Splitter on our hands-- who also came to the NBA at a similar age.
It would be nice. There are a lot of variables though. I remember when Navarro came over from Barcelona and joined the Grizzlies for a year and hated it. Him and Tomic are teammates.

1) I have looked for a buyout number everywhere, but have not found one. I would not put a whole lot of trust into that figure
2) Splitter, which was by all means had a more impressive resume than Tomic does at this point, signed a three year 11 million dollar deal.
So clearly, we won't be paying 4-6 million per. I'd expect a very similar contract for Tomic as well.
So at the end of the day, paying 18 million for three years of Tomic could be a huge bargain for the Jazz. He doesn't strike me as bust potential-- he seems too talented not to be able to score on opposing benches.
Yeah, there are probably limits to how much we can pay him because he would be a rookie, so it would be a rookie-esque contract.
I'm more worried about Tomic's end wanting to come over here, than I am worried about us wanting him.

Yeah, i caught that.
But Navarro had a long history of being "the man" of European play. He came to the Grizzlies, got pretty decent stats, but only started 30 of their games.
Tomic on the other hand hasn't really had too much history of that, outside of this season.
Plus, his agent will be telling Tomic that his stock might never be as high, and this could ensure him a maximum contract, and best shot at the NBA at a team starving for minutes from another big man.

In every interview I have read regarding this, he always mentions how he is loyal to the Jazz, and talks about it as if its an option that has still not escaped his mind.
Seeing Splitter's success probably strikes his curiosity as well.
Also, I cannot find the interview now, but they were talking about the NBA, and he mentioned how there was so many NBA scouts, and how the Jazz are in constant contact with him.
EDIT: But really, I'm just grasping at straws here. I just REALLY want him to come this offseason, lol

Splitter was eager to prove his mettle in the NBA, so when the time came money wasn't the #1 priority. Tomic seems to be a different case. If the past is any indication, then we will need to offer greater rewards.

Splitter joined the spurs when Manu, Tim, and Tony were getting payyyyy'd. I'm guessing there wasn't a ton of cash available, and if Splitter wanted to play and win in the NBA, he could take their offer or leave it.
It's very different on the business end with Tomic. Why would he and HIS AGENT not bargain for a big slice of that cap-space cake? Only fools wouldn't. It's entirely possible that Tomic would never come over based on a snag of this ilk.
This issue would throw fuel on any fire Tomic has to make cash... which I remember reading at some point.

Pekovic is 27 and started playing for the Wolves when he was 25, I guess?
Drafted 5 years ago. Was 22 or 23 when drafted, picked 31st overall.
Scola was also around the same age when he debuted with the Rockets.
He would be a rookie coming over. Rookies can only get paid so much.
Second round picks are not subject to a pay scale, right?
