Will Hayward ever be better than Hornacek was?

I think most here would agree that Hayward will be best suited to be the 3rd best player on a title contender, and we all remember Kobe saying Hayward is a more talented Hornacek. So, this got me thinking. Is our future 3rd best player (Hayward) ever going to be better than the 3rd best player for our past title contender (Hornacek)?

Very different players, honestly. Hornacek could be one of the best shooters of all time. There are very, VERY few SGs currently in the NBA that are as good as Horny was back in his prime.

38.0mpg 51.2 FG% 43.9 3P% 88.6 FT% 5.0rpg 5.1apg 2.0spg 20.1ppg

I'm a huge Hayward fan, but DAMN.

That's my thought. Would be huge if Hayward could end up better than Hornacek, but the odds are against it.

I know, right?

But Hornacek only broke 20 PPG once in his career. The other seasons he was putting up stats more like what we're expecting Hayward to put up this season.

If Hayward ever equaled Hornacek it would be fan-damn-tastic. I seriously doubt he will surpass him, but it's a good thread topic.

That said you have to remember that Hornacek played against players from the 90's. He barely got into the 2000's, and as we know, as the NBA progresses the players get exponentially better, so obviously Hornacek would have a hard time getting into double-digits against today's genetically-engineered NBA super-humans. He might get a rebound or 2 per game just because he plays hard, but please, there is no way he can compete. So essentially, by virtue of the far superior competition today, and how much more superior that competition will be tomorrow, Hayward is already better than Hornacek.

So, yeah.

Whoa I just quoted myself, does that mean I will go blind?

I'd take Hayward over Hornacek today knowing what we know.

I love Hayward's D.

Do you think Hayward would have done more to help us win it all with Stockton and Malone than Hornacek did?

If Hayward can put together another year of SOLID 3pt shooting... I think I'd be quietly optimistic he could do it.

But for now, it's still a "No" for me.

This doesn't seem like a fair question since we aren't talking about the Hayward of now, we're talking about the Hayward of the future; what we think he will be at his best.

I'll say Hayward definitely has the potential to be better than Hornacek. And I'm pretty optimistic about his ability to actually do it. But I'm totally homerish about the future of this team.
