Did Exum really say that???!!!???

“I think I’m still comfortable at the point,” Exum said. “I still want to get the ball in my hands as much as possible. I didn’t get it a lot in my hands these last couple of games. … With Coach’s system, it’s open, but there’s been so many times where I just went away from the ball and let Trey take it."

Yeah I get the same feeling watching the summer league game. Exum would kinda sulk a bit any time he doesn't get to bring up the ball and make plays. He seems to just stand in the corner while Burke run the plays and directing the offense.

Hopefully Quin can sort this out, but Exum already saying he needs the ball in his hand this early in the piece is a bit of a worry. He's a good kid - for him to have said that he must have really felt strongly about it IMO.

In my opinion, Exum is such a talent, you need to put the ball in his hand as much as possible - which probably means Burke needs to go.

i remember the time when he didn't even touch the ball for like 8 straight possession. so what he says is totally true

Wow really??? I didn't count but yeah there were quite a few times he would run up the floor, then stand in the corner, then runs back on defense and back again, 2-3 times in a row.

He also looked really dis-interested doing it as well.

Also Exum is not like Kobe (even as an 18 year old) who would just take the ball from D. Fisher and go to work, and just flat out score.

Exum is like that kid that follows EVERYTHING that the coach tell him to do. So if he's told to share the ball with Burke, that's what he'll do, he'll just get out of the way unless it was his turn to handle the ball and create.

Exum is already a better PG than Burke, so I can see why he might be annoyed.

Yep. Agreed. Was apparent in the first 5 min. of the first SL game. From memory, we were down early then when Burke goes out and Exum was allowed to create, we scored like 8 straight points off of him just handling the ball and allowed to make plays.

I would be fine if Burke was a Kenny Smith/D.Fish type player who is happy just bringing the ball up and let your star player go to work, but Burke isn't that type of guy. He NEEDS to be THE MAN. That's my real concern.

Told u guys.

There's gonna be a **** fight in one of these days for the guard spot.

Well it's a hell of a lot more fun than playing the game without fun or competition.

Exum should have the ball in his hands as much as possible. Good things happen when he gets the ball. When you get a chance go back and watch the first summer league game and start counting the number of times he makes the correct play/makes something good happen. The more he tried to fit in alongside Trey as Summer League went on, the more he struggled.

It's going to be interesting how Snyder perceives him. He's emphatically a 1 to me, not a 2. And he's got far better instincts than Burke has ever shown.

But I don't want it to get to the situation where Exum is already looking to bolt Utah neither though. If he isn't happy this early in the piece it doesn't bode well for later on.

It might also affect his play on the court. We want him going at 110%, not going at 70% because Burke needs the ball in his hand.

Yeah it was clear as day in that first game that Exum is just ahead of Burke already and he's only 19.

I think the Jazz could use both, depending on the opponent defensive set.

Absolutely. But predominantly I would prefer it that Exum handles the ball and Burke just takes a back seat just because Exum seems to already have better playmaking ability.

Problem is Han Solo (Burke) has that attitude where he needs to be THE MAN and just won't relinquish the reign to Luke Skywalker.

I beg to differ on Burke being a lesser playmaker than Exum. I can see a much better natural playmaker in Burke, yet Exum is a lot more flashy since he is the athletic and shining one. Exum has great potential but I don't think at least for now he is better than Burke for the playmaking contest.

I think Exum has better skills than Burke, but Exum has yet to prove that he can be a calming force on the team and lead like Burke can. Like Burke or not, he is one of the few leaders on this team, and he's a stabilizing force when he's running the point.

I like Exum a lot, but our offense performed better this summer when Burke was leading it. Maybe we should wait until the actual games start, and maybe Exum should work on his off-ball skills a little more. Perhaps he's better at the 1, but maybe the team is better when he can play with Burke. It's all about the team…right?

LOL ... really??? We must have been watching a different Summer League, because Burke looked really slow to react, he looks to shoot a lot more than making plays for others.

Exum makes quick decision, seems like a really natural passer of the ball, always looking to pass first and attack only when nothing's on.

"Right."

I'm glad it's Quin who's going to figure this out and not Corbin. Exum will get his fair shot, but really it's going to take development.

I liked Exum's instincts to a natural level too, but judging Burke on summer league when he has already one season of pro experience under his belt does not sound not fair to me. I don't think Burke gave a **** about SL more than the next guy and clutch players like him play better in important games.

Another aspect to consider too is I think Exum takes a lot of satisfaction in making passes and making plays for others to finish first, then gets his own shot. (really evident in the first SL game, even the commentators picked up on this).

I don't think Burke has the same 'fire' to make passes. He seems to enjoy making shots and being the 'hero' that way. In Summer League last year in a video I overheard him talking to a team mate saying "At Michigan I would have gone up and shoot that shot, but here I have to make a pass".

Another time was coming back from his meeting with Stockton, he was interviewed and said the most important thing he picked up was it's better to look to pass first then opportunities would open up for himself offensively. As a PG, I'm surprised Burke needed to be told that.

All this tells me his first tendency is to score and not pass.
