2014 College Football

lol @ Ute fans for thinking the same thing hasn't/couldn't/wouldn't happen to them. It's not like they don't charge the field and get in the face of the head coach only to run away scared when said coach turns around.
But then again, these are the same fans that are "completely over the rivalry". I guess I should have expected as much.

An apples to oranges argument. Suspenders Boy pussing out on Bronco is a FAN thing. Not even in the same ballpark as what happened yesterday between two teams.

From watching it a few times, I actually consider Memphis the aggressor. I also have no problem with BYU's initial reaction of trying to save one of their teammates who was being ganged up on. However, all the horrible behavior after that can be placed evenly on both teams. #12 from BYU got what was coming to him and continued to act just as awful as any of the Memphis players. The "They started it argument" is not going to excuse BYU's part of the brawl. Quite honestly, shame on both teams.

And it's not fair, but BYU is going to bear the brunt of this from an image standpoint. While Memphis may have been the aggressor, Memphis is also not a religious institution that goes out of it's way to point out how they have higher moral standards and are "different" from other schools. 5 years from now, people will still remember the "BYU Brawl" and Memphis will be but a foot note. Like I said, that isn't fair, and even I don't agree with it, but when you tie yourself to the hip with your religion and supposed higher standards, you're going to be a target to some degree.

And Big B, as far as Ute fans thinking this hasn't/couldn't/wouldn't happen with their team, all I can say is that so far, it hasn't. Might it happen someday? Certainly. I think any team could find themselves in this position at some point. However, this is really bad timing for BYU from an image standpoint. You're not too removed from a few of your players being involved in a brawl with customers at a Mexican restaurant in which punches were thrown, we've seen Max Hall find himself in a bad spot after being a flag waver for class and morals while calling out Utah and their fans, and now the Miami Beach Brawl.

Is all of that BYU's fault? Certainly not, but it's seriously bad PR for a school that strives for the EXACT opposite kind of press and it comes on the heels of a what could be considered an underachieving season for a team that's trying to present itself as a program that warrants P5 inclusion. The big picture isn't pretty right now.

Everyone saw #12 Nacua cheapshot a Memphis player that was being held back. Nacua turned and ran with his face bloodied and we thought all thought "oh wow, probably justified". I'm not so sure about that anymore. He definitely seemed like an instigator here (sucker punch #1 of 2) and he paid the price. Wait for it....

Agreed.

Great post.
Byu deserves alot of the blame here and it was totally embarrassing and will scar the program very badly.
I have even heard a few things about maybe this incident pushes byu to just get rid of the football program all together

and will scar the program very badly.

No it won't. They could act like it was a big pillow fight and it would all go away. There's nothing serious here. It was a bunch of guys in pads and helmets scrapping. Big whoop. They should tell everybody to stop overreacting, suspend Nacua for a game, and move on. Don't even address it further. It's not a big deal. BYU will probably make it into a bigger deal than it is however because the old guys sitting in the SLC offices are completely out of touch with this sort of thing and might start whining so we'll see. But it's all on them.

Thug.

Dude two memphis players attacked a BYU player from behind. That is what started it. Go watch the video.

Why would Memphis do it after winning?

1-Douchebags gunna douche

2-A little attention for a nobody school
That nobody school is just as likely to get a big 12 invite as you are.

Who was that holding his collar? Steve Kaufusi? Kai getting drilled is all on him.

This.

The bigger scar is the whole independence thing.

I think the entire program is suffering from what the eggheads on top have decided. The coaches are frustrated. The players are frustrated. They don't like having their season's end with one loss. They don't like playing decent high school teams in an empty stadium in November. And fans ultimately want to see this program in a p5 conference. Rumor has it that the Big 12 is interested in Memphis and Cinn. So yesterday's loss surely didn't help.

If it takes going back to the MWC then you do it. BYU needs to have a conference. In the MWC, they will find themselves in 3 out of the next 5 big bowl games. I think the entire athletic department would see a surge in excitement and moral. Dave Rose won't say it (Unlike Bronco, who has been very vocal), he hates playing in high school gyms and would much rather be in the MWC.

Ask Holmoe what he thinks... He too would like to see BYU in (any) conference at this point.

Unfortunately, the businessmen who decided to go independent have so far trumped the well-being of the athletic departments.

I think the brawl was a perfect statement about BYU's athletic department right now. Everyone is tired and frustrated from being pushed around and only the players seem to have each others' backs.

They were the lead advertised story for sportscenter during halftime for the Monday night football game. It looks horrible for the image whether you want to believe that or not.

I'm well aware that it's in the news cycle. I'd be watching the fight over and over again no matter who was involved too. But that's just the social media world circa 2014 for you. Everyone e on twitter is talking about how awesome it was. It's easily 9/1(with the 1 being Ute fans pretending they are offended) being seen as just a manning up thing. Comments like, "I didn't know Mormons could throw down like that." In what world is that a bad thing? Certainly not one involving football.

Yeah. Nacua threw himself into the fray and #94 didn't respond until after punches were thrown. Makes the cheap shot look even worse now. Haven't seen anything with #40 in it. Looks like he didn't do anything to Kai. As far as I'm concerned, that's the only thing I've seen so far where a BYU player was the instigator. That sucker punch probably needs to be dealt with, but the rest is just defending themselves in a highly volatile situation.

Again, I find it hilarious that the "most offended" are Utah fans.

The more you folks are "over" us the more confirmed I see that you just aren't. Be honest, Uties, you miss your old boyfriend... Badly. CU just isn't cutting it.

Talk to your AD. Cowgirl up and play us.

This is the most byu video I have ever seen.

Yesssssssssss

Good thoughts, man. Those teams are a combined 47-12 this year. Washington State almost lost as many games by themselves. Way to make a terrible point terribly. But, P5 baby! Pac USC + 11, baby! USC has won a bunch of National titles.....so we're special by association! Go Utes!

Please never change.

I love the BYU rivalry and hope it doesn't die. As a Utah fan, it was incredible to play USC, Stanford, Oregon, UCLA, and Michigan all in the same year. Every game in the PAC12 is an awesome "big time college football" experience - win or lose - and obviously 100 times better than the old days when Wyoming, UNLV, San Diego State, etc. would come to Rice Eccles. But personally, not playing in a rivalry game, a true rivalry game kind of sucks.

Michigan has three true rivals (Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Michigan State) and I would love to see Utah get there as well - it does not have to just be BYU. Although the BYU game should happen every year. Hopefully the Utes get back to playing the Cougars consistently, Colorado turns into something (maybe a fight needs to break out at the end of one of their games), and maybe Oregon State with Gary Anderson will turn into a great rival- I could see it. The last two or another team from the PAC12 will take some time to develop though.

Point being, I don't think a majority of Utah fans want to see the BYU game go away. Those who pretend like they don't care are just pushing buttons and talking smack. For most Utah fans, its way too much fun beating BYU to have that game just disappear.

Once again, BYU fans miss the point. I'm not seeing a lot of offended Ute fans. I'm seeing an awful lot of amused Ute fans. And of course, Ute fans are going to have the biggest reaction. After decades of having the "living right" and "classes" smack talk thrown in our direction, it's going to solicit a strong response from Utah fans when it's BYU having players involved in situations in which they're getting into fistfights at Rancharitos with patrons, brawling on the football field, and having a very vocal anti-Utah Max Hall get in the mess he was just in.

Don't like Utah's response? Talk to the BYU coaches, players, and fans that have been responsible for shoving their better than you, holier than thou agenda down Utah's throats for as long as we can remember. Has it been everybody involved with BYU? Obviously not, but it certainly exists. Guys like Lenny Gomes, Austin Collie, and Max Hall (just to name a few) have made this bed for BYU. Fair or unfair, people are going to pile on that school when things go ****house and they only have themselves to blame.

And as far as Utah "missing their old boyfriend", with each passing day more and more Ute fans are coming around to the idea that never playing BYU again would be just fine. Count me in as one of 'em. Right now, Utah is watching their old boyfriend struggle in the dating pool. 1-and-3 against MWC schools and losing to a mid-major Memphis in their bowl game isn't really doing much in the way of making Utah feel like they need to come running back to them. In fact, it's the old boyfriend watching their ex go on to bigger and better things without them. That's gotta sting worse than a Memphis helmet.

I can tell you with 100% honesty that I'm not missing the game. The rhetoric and animosity from both sides leading up to the games started to take away from the enjoyment IMO. It will take time for Utah to forge some true rivalries in the PAC, but I'm willing to be patient. I've enjoyed this football season as much as I ever have and that was without BYU on the schedule. You can speak for yourself, because there is certainly not a void in my life when they're off the schedule.

BYU made a huge mistake going independent when they did. They were hoping to build the type of freedom that Notre Dame has, but they're just not good enough. They need to affiliate with a conference as soon as they can.
