Players the Pelicans could take a flyer on in free agency:
Shabazz Muhammad - massive risk, but maybe worth it to throw 14 his direction and I still wouldn't be sure if the Wolves won't match. This requires Asik to be moved in advance and Holiday agreeing to take roughly 15 a year.
Tony Snell could be worth the risk on a small contract, but I reckon other teams will take the risk as well and have more cash to spend. His BBIQ is very limited, but he can make an open three with good accuracy. You'd bet on his accuracy being stable when frequency goes up. Pairing him with Cousins could slow the game down for him when the constraints are more clear and he just has to move around Cousins back to the basket action and bet on help defense to generate more looks for him. I'm not even sure the Bucks wouldn't match a mid level sized offer.
CJ Miles is similar to Snell, but he'll command a bigger salary. Could still be worth it around 12 per year. His contract won't be a steal but he could be worth it in role player capacity for the Pelicans.
Jodie Meeks reclamation project on a cheapo contract could be worth it as well. You'd have to give him a 2 year deal, player option and low salary. Same for Ben McLemore.
Dion Waiters or Tim Hardaway Jr are smaller scoring guards. Both are decent shooter and will command contracts in the 12-15 range. Neither can't play SF against LeBron, Kawhi, Durant etc.
I'm not sure whether it works, but if Gallinari opts into his final year($16M), can he be moved after July 1st by the team? Denver could get a 2018 1st from New Orleans in exchange for a TPE or taking back Asik as they don't need capspace for another 2 years at least. In that case they'll want 2 1sts though. I'm pretty sure though that Gallo will opt out and seek his last long term contract for around 20 a year. He'd be a very good fit for NEw Orleans though with positional flexibility.
I think CJ Miles should be their first option and Hardaway/Waiters the next while crossing fingers that works his *** off and becomes a decent role player. If you take a smaller guy with the remaining capspace you're basically banking on Solomon becoming decent. You need an answer on the wing defensively for the best wings in the league, but you need him to also be a threat as a spot up shooter, cutter or screen setter/constant mover on offense to play him 30 min a game.
Shabazz, Snell and McLemore are restricted, so that's a huge gamble binding your capspace for 3 days until the team decides to match and not being able to participate in real negotiations for that time frame.
