2017-2018 Jazz salaries, cap/LT details

That's what was rumored, but I never saw confirmation.

Jazz don't disclose when they reach actual agreements, so they will likely never say. Just have to read the tea leaves on this stuff.

First off, Hill is great. Not $22 million/year great. But $17 - $18 million, I think we have the perect fit. He could easily get $20 million per year so we probably have to pay that much to keep him.

My dream scenario goes like this:

Hayward opts IN because he can make a lot more money if he does over the next 6 years. That puts the team at $82 million. Ingles inks for $8, hill inks for $17, and Millsap inks for $17.

How you ask? Not pick up diaw's contract - but offer him less if he wants to stay.
We trade favors and Burks for future draft picks or young talent. Say Favors to the kings for garret temple (pipe dream) and Burks to the the mavs for a draft pick.

That frees up $20 million in cap space.

That puts us at $104. Add our draft picks, resign some of our 12 - 15 guys, and go win 64 games. The cap is $106. Luxury tax is $122.

Next year when we need to up Hayward's salary, we will have an expiring $12 million from Joe Johnson to cover the majority of Hayward's raise. Lyles comes off the books as well I think which will add another $3ish. Hayward takes $32 million so there is the $15 million necessary between Joe jesus and lyles. We have 4 players that could all be all stars. Hill, millsap, hayward, gobert. We sacrifice some of our depth by losing a man on one leg and a man on no legs for assets. A few min. League salaries.

I don't think millsap and hill would sign for $17, but I also don't think they will get much more than that at their ages. This gives them both a chance to win while making good money. Millsap loves quin. We go deep in the playoffs for the next 4 years with that squad. That is a better use of our space then demarrer Carroll.

I posted this on another board. I'll post it here as well. Trying to look at things objectively.

* * *

The most successful formula for a team that wants to contend is:

** 3 All Star-caliber players on max deals

** 2 - 3 complementary players on team-friendly deals

** A handful of role players on rookie deals, mid-levels or vet minimums

Any player in the 2nd tier that gets expensive (like Favors or Hill are about to) no longer fits this blueprint and should be moved out. Either trade for a high-potential talent, trade for a draft pick, or let them walk.

The hard part to the above is acquiring the All Star-caliber players. So far, the Jazz have Hayward and Gobert, both of whom were acquired in the draft. If they drafted CJ McCollum or Giannis instead of Trey Burke, they'd already have their third All Star-caliber player, but they bricked that draft. So they need a few more swings to get that player.

Here are the moves:

-- Trade Favors for a young upside player or draft picks. The goal is to find that third All Star-caliber player. Favors is somewhat redundant with Gobert, or at least doesn't fit well with Gobert, so move him between now and the trade deadline.

-- Let Hill walk, unless he's going to get paid like the 2nd-tier player he is. For crying out loud, he only played 49 games last year and the Jazz still won 51 games.

-- The Jazz's players in the 2nd tier are Hood, Joe Johnson, Exum, Burks, Lyles and Ingles if he can be re-signed.

-- The Jazz need to draft players with All Star upside, even if they're risky picks. There's no point drafting average-looking talent. Go big or go home. Getting talent in the draft is historically the only way the Jazz have acquired All Star-caliber talent, unless you go back to when they traded for a disgruntled Hornacek more than 20 years ago. Well, there was also that Boozer/Memo Okur free-agency thing, but that was a rare opportunity.

The 2017/18 season is a bit of a down shift while the Jazz try to find their 3rd All Star and the Warriors reign. They'll still win 50 games and likely make it to the 2nd round.

We would have a lot more wiggle room if he makes an All-NBA team and opts-in that's for sure.

Ran the numbers and if he makes All-NBA and opts in we could keep everyone and pay Hill/Ingles around $33M combined and still be under luxury tax. Assuming Diaw is not picked up. If we dumped Burks we'd have even more wiggle room.

If we dump Burks we could sign someone for around $10M a year right?

I know the thread is all about cap space and luxury taxes but most of the discussion was about trading Favors for Carroll plus picks.
May I stir the pot and ask what if it will be Favors and picks for Middleton (KM) and picks?
Yes the main debate is on Favors - if he still fits, would Jazz be able to afford him, etc etc and DMC is just an add-on.
But with KM, if healthy, could be somebody that can help Jazz.
Bucks are over the cap and close to LT, might lose Monroe, so ...
