2021 NBA Draft Preview (new thread)

Someone asked Tony Jones about Primo and he said that he's going to need time to develop and the Jazz have such a short window that they'll probably try and take an older player that's ready to play right now. Not sure why he keeps deleting these tweets.

I tweeted back and forth with him about Primo. Regarding, taking time for a player to develop, that has to be one of the dumbest reasons ever not to draft a player.

If we took a more "NBA ready" player because we are worried about the development ceiling of a player, then I understand it.

But if we feel like a player has a high ceiling that just needs development time, worrying about the time it takes to get to that ceiling is dumb as hell. Take the best player.

Coming from a team that just took 3 years to develop Bradley and Niang, then spent 2 years on Morgan, Oni and Brantley.

Jazz don't play their rookies anyway. Whoever they take will spend their first season in the G-league.

You think Neemi goes round 1?

Because we are drafting Ayayi and the FO doesn’t want anyone to know.

Ayayi and Ayo Dosunmu are both strong possibilities for the Jazz. So is Tre Mann if he's still available. The Jazz need a long-term solution at guard to play next to Mitchell, and this isn't a bad draft to do it if the Jazz stay in their range. They can draft an imitation SGA at #30. I'm already preparing to talk myself into this. There's also AJ Lawson in the 2nd round if the Jazz trade back.

The fact that Mike Conley is a free agent might make this scenario all the more likely (like last year with Gobert entering FA).

It would also be very like the Jazz to say that Herb Jones, Kessler Edwards and some other wing available in the 2nd round (like Trendon Watford) are good enough for our needs, so then they don't make a move for Roko or Thor. It's a strategy to fill out the roster rather than draft BPA with high upside.

Most everybody we will take at #30 would need time to develop.
That is the dirty not secret that everyone ignores I guess. Outside of like 5-6 guys most rooks can’t be rotation players on really good teams. I think Butler and Duarte could. A few guys in the lotto obviously. Older doesn’t always equal ready.

Just behold. Jazz gonna draft Ayayi, bring back Conley then trade for Delon Wright as the backup PG. So we can send Ayayi right down to G league and offload him with a couple of 2nd in a few years.

I get the feeling people are going to be wondering why he was mocked (and might be picked) so low. Could see him splashing at a high level right out of the gate.

Another guard who could be in play at #30 is Deuce McBride. He's a long, aggressive defender who can spot up off the ball. There's just a whole bunch of 1st-round caliber guards in this draft.

I haven't heard if Jared Butler has been medically cleared to play, btw. He reportedly has some kind of a heart condition that kept him out of the Combine. That's a pretty serious red flag that could cause him to fall or drop out of the draft entirely.

My subscription to The Athletic recently expired. One of the Knicks' writers is suggesting that the Jazz are open to trading Derrick Favors. Not sure if the Knicks are a potential destination or not. See if it's implied in the article.
