LaVine is soooo far away from helping us on defense. There's a good chance he'll never figure it out / develop a body for it / etc.
K.J. Daniels has starter-potential as a 3&D guy. Get him.

KJ is redundant if we take Gordon, and at 6'6" and being 22 at the start of the season, has very little upside. He is a blah pick, and won't be able to help much offensively, ever IMO.

Lavine has speed, length, hops, wingspan, lateral quickness. Everything needed to play insane D, except weight. At 19, it isn't hard to imagine him bulking up once NBA trainers get him a regiment and diet. He is not Jeremy Evans by any means. Our team suffers from a lack of pure shooters as much as it does from a lack of defenders. Lavine has in-the-gym range on his jumpers. Pair his shooting with everything else he has going, and he is the steal of the draft based on projected selection. Fact is, most mid-first round picks don't even stay in the league past their rookie contracts. Rotation players can be had via free agency, since those are the only FA's that will come to Utah. A player like Lavine has star potential IF he and the team develops him correctly.

What could really swing this draft for the Jazz is picking up a very good player in the mid teens. Then the Jazz have 7 starting-quality players plus cap space plus future assets. That's good ammo to go trade shopping for a young veteran (for example, if a Harden-type situation arises). Or you just go to war with those 7 plus maybe sign an additional good FA with the cap space (or do a deal like GS again) and wait for the deadline to make your move. Unlike last year, when RJ and Marvin were just too expensive relative to their value, the Jazz will have young players with upside. Also gives a chance for Kanter, Burks and Burke to increase their trade value.

At this point, Lavine is projected 17, which will require moving up. I proposed 23, 35, rights to Tomic, or something of that nature. We could add on a future second if needs be.

Weakness is he can't shoot the 3, but neither could Millsap when he came up.

.350 3 pt FG. Much better than what soon to be 12 mil/year Jazz leader shot last year.

kJ a 3 & D? You must mean 3 as in SF, because the kid shot 30% from 3 IN COLLEGE last year, and 31% over his 3 yr span.

Even if he was.a 3 & D, they can be had in FA. We'll probably invite B Rush to SL or preseason and see if he is back to form. When your team is in need of stars, and the only way you'll ever get them is via the draft, why waste your picks on blah players when you have the chance for more. Jazz need to take more risks if they are ever going to get one again.

A mid-teen pick is a small price to pay, especially since most rotational players don't pan out when drafted that late.
