i'm not saying sign him based on a what-if. i'm saying sign him because:
a) he's underrated - jazz fans don't realize that, when healthy, he's one of our best wings
b) we need wing depth
c) he is the only consistent 3-point threat on the tea
d) 3-4M is not too much to pay for a specialist
e) we are a worse team without him than we are with him
here's our depth chart as of right now, assuming boozer walks but we keep fes and matthews:
memo (injured), fes, koufos
sap, AK
miles, hayward
matthews
deron, price
you're really saying we can't afford to spend role player money on another backup wing?
1) I find Korver to be our worst wing. I love his shooting, ability to hit off the curl, effort, and knowledge of our system but he's so flawed defensively (despite the effort) that it kills us in any and all big spots.
2) Yes we do. But AK, who you put only as the backup 4, is our 4th wing, assuming we match any deal on Wes.
3) True but I have no expectations for him to repeat last year's efforts. And I have enough faith in Deron, Wes, and C.J. now to be those threats.
4) For a 4th or 5th wing, in this NBA economic market, yes it is imo. The Celts were paying Eddie House less than 1M when he helped jumpstart them off the bench a couple years ago. We don't need to pay 3-4 times that.
5) Obviously, the same can be said for almost all NBA players who fit a role and know the system. But this is not reason enough to re-sign him.
No, what I'm saying is that 3-4M is too much for a role player with his glaring defensive deficiencies in this economic market as our current roster is constructed. And while role players are crucial to moving far into the playoffs, you win with impact players.
I'd rather lose him, give the time to Hayward so he can develop, and let AK walk/expire/leave via a trade so we have wiggle room next summer to get a potential impact player like Gasol or Horford. At that point, we'd also have just one year left on Okur's contract.
Just my opinion. I fully understand and respect yours. I just disagree with the price point.
