Al Jefferson Projections

As has been said, Big Al needs to be more Big Al physically on the offensive end. But you see this with a lot of players as they develop. Every player's tendency is to use their moves to get a clean shot. The learning curve is to get physical shots. That's counterintuitive for a lot of guys. I think Al will make that jump.

Defensively, I think his problems are overstated. We were a horrific defensive team last year no matter what the numbers say. Guys were out of position after the 12 second mark of every clock. If there's better team defense, Al will fill his role just fine. But he will never be a defensive eraser like KG.

There have been snippets of opinions on how Big Al would do across a few threads over the past few months, so I figured we should try and consolidate all of the opinions into one thread.

How will he do? Will his progress as of last season continue?? Will he begin to draw more fouls?? Will he improve defensively? Will his PPG increase, decrease??

I am finding his stat line hard to predict, seeing as if the rest of our team improves their scoring, then naturally Al won't get as many attempts. I am predicting that his FG% will increase just like it did towards the end of last season, as well as his assists, and his fouls-drawn. I am predicting him to be a better team-player than last season, after gaining one full year of experience in such team-oriented offense (as opposed to the offences of the teams he used to be a part of throughout his career). I am hoping for a breakout-season for AL not from a statistical standpoint, but from a team-standpoint.

My guess: 20PPG(+/- 2, depending on how many attempts he is dished) 10 RPG, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. FG% will increase as well.

I have continuously supported Al Jefferson over the offseason, and I hope that many of his opposers can eat some serious crow after the end of this season not for my sake, but for the sake of our team. An Al Jefferson that benefits the team could be a player that we could hang onto, for years to come. Plus, he could increase his trade value, and if we have full faith in Kanter, then we can get a much more palatable trade during his contract year.

Curious to hear everyones predictions, and your explanations for them.

No his progress isnt gonna continue, no his defense isnt gonna improve, no he wont draw more fouls

In order to get these numbers, he has to play full 48 mins i think.

Also the thing you can not understand is, it is not for team's sake if he will slightly improve himself. Because then he is gonna ask more money once his contract is over, considering he is already overpaid, he will be like a second Lewis issue. The reality is that, even if he makes good numbers, he will never be the first or second option in a contender.

Thats funny, because he's already averaged more points AND rebounds than my projections in two different seasons. Cool story, though.

I also completely agree with GVC. I would much prefer him improving our team play, as opposed to him simply going for stat-stuffing instead. I just have igh-hopes for the guy, and I hope he can deliver. Heres to an interesting season.

But its a big IF, i agree with GVC too, however the point is, he won't do these things. Because his main problem isn't talent, he is talented indeed, but his problem is he doesn't know what to do, it is not easy to teach people basketball after 27.

I think we should trade him, latest next year, even if Kanter and Favors suck. Because i would prefer to get stuck to undersized, underpaid Millsap, rather than getting stuck to overpaid, flawed Jefferson.

If we trade Jefferson and suck, getting a top pick, then your precious Kanter will get replaced by Anthony Davis or Andre Drummond.

Kanter will suck is a much less chance than Jefferson will not have metamorphosis and become another Shaq like you guys fantasize about

well, big AL averaged over 23pts, 11 reb and 1.5 blk for Wolves in 2008-2009... Do you honestly think Kanter will ever reach those numbers? We do not need big AL to turn into Shaq but if can get us 23pts, 11reb, 2 blk... thats better then Boozer for sure.

Not following joke.

About midway through last season all the reporters kept giving him flack for never dunking. So one night, I forget who they were playing, he throws down and huge dunk and lands right on his ***. He's got his *** iced in the post game interview and says something so the effect of "This is why I don't dunk, I hurt my buttocks" in that forest gump voice of his. you don't remember that???

Btw better than boozer isnt an indication of being good enough

True. But it is a damn sight better than an untested rookie. I think AJ will bring some stability to the team in general, and I think his numbers will be solid. He is pretty young himself and if he brings those kinds of numbers this year and going forward Kanter may just well become our best trade bait.

Kanter is a hardworker, i didn't even know he was that hardworking player before, but he really is, the games i saw, he made a lot of mistakes, but most of them was due lack of serious games in the last 2 years, and sometimes he does unnecessary mistakes in order to prove he is as good as being picked at 3rd place. But i don't see anything that he won't be able to improve in time, thats why i am so high on him. He is as talented as big al, plus he has good fundamentals unlike big al.
