What's new

Avery Bradley in the off season?

Bradley to me seems like a good option if we can't afford a max player. He would be a player you sign if exum demands too much a la George hill.

Plus, Dennis Lindsey goes after players he likes. That has been a trend at least. There was an inquiry into Bradley...

The Jazz have tried to monopolize some of the best defensive talent in the league and Bradley fits right there. But you can almost pick two of the three (favors, bradley, exum) if you can dump Burks IF this summer's spending is low as predicted.

Hard pass. We're set at guard for next year after we re-sign Exum on an affordable deal this summer. Let's keep our options open for 2019's FA instead of committing to Bradley who doesn't move the needle.

The new CBA does not allow for non guarantees to be counted towards meeting salary matching requirements anymore.
Didn't realize that. Oh well, Jazz can use the non-guaranteed contracts in almost the same way. Renounce the players to free up the $13M in cap space and then do an uneven trade (for example, taking on ~$25M and giving back only Burks at $12M). Taking on Crowder prevents Jazz from opening up a max slot, but if Jazz really needed to clear that much cap room, Jae is an easily tradeable player.

Of course, I'm also figuring on Utah retaining Dante. His QO amount doesnt really matter. It's his cap hold that is key. Hoopshype had it at $15M at one point, but that info has disappeared.

The time will come for us to make a big move and offer a free agent a huge contract to get us to the next level. Avery Bradley is not that time. Also I really don't think he fits well. What he does, we already have better versions of on this team. I want Mitchell to have a stronger PG in the backcourt. Also think a healthy Exum could be the great defender Bradley is or at least provide a lot of that.

Go watch avery Bradley again folks. He is an elite defender. I would say top 2 defender at the point guard position if not top 1.

Next consider that the jazz have added almost exclusively defenders. World class defenders when possible a la Udoh, Thabo, etc. Next we love to add versatility and length. Next, when there are rumors that Dennis is chasing someone, they often end up here.

For those reasons, I would say Bradley is a much safer get than many other options. He would help us keep building on the model even if he isnt a max salary player by any stretch of the imagination.

Why would Dennis get the toughest, longest, and best defensive team in the league? I would argue it's the ONLY chance anyone has of beating the warriors.

Is it a better move than adding an established all star? I doubt it. But is Avery Bradley today better than exum will be next year? Yup. Is he better in 2 or 3 years under quin? I wouldn't bet on it either way.

No. This is a move that maybe you look at two years from now if you haven’t gotten a 3rd star to team up with Donovan and Rudy. 2018/19/20 money should be completely focused on adding a STAR - nothing less.

No thanks on Avery Bradley. Too expensive, plays the same position as Donovan AND is coming off of a terrible season. Unless they get a screaming deal on a 1 year contract (or 2 years with a team option). . . that’s an easy pass.

I'm a fan & he fits the mold of player DL has targeted but imo we need to be careful about who we commit significant long-term cap space to as we are likely still an impact player away from truly contending.

Bradley is seemingly maxed out so unless he comes at a bargain, we need to preserve our remaining long-term cap space for a potential 3rd star. Also, assuming he continues his play/progress, Royce likely makes him somewhat redundant. However, I would love to see a starting 5 of:

DM
Bradley
Ingles
Crowder
Gobert

Has anybody watched Bradley this season...

Only 2 players on our team have had a higher usage rate than Bradley: Mitch and Hood.

Only Joe Johnson, Burks and Rubio have a worse eFG% than Bradley.

High usage, inefficient player this year. Sure great complementary piece (for a team like the Thunder) but Jazz need to be setting their sights higher in 2019 FA.

Also the notion we have cap space this Summer is weird that it keeps popping up. We have cap space if we let Favors, Exum, Sef, Udoh, Jerebko and Neto go. No thanks.

Little off subject, but have been thinking about this for a while, but is there just the slightest chance Mitchell could help recruit PG to Utah considering he has a connection to DM, as he is partly responsible for Mitchell staying in the draft.

Am I totally grasping at straws here?

If it was a deal around the MLE then fine. He's dealing with injuries (like always) but could return to form in our system. I think he's a good defender still defensive metrics be damned...

His market value is likely higher than that, so someone else can have him. I think we are bargain hunters this offseason... if no bargain comes along keep the powder dry for next year (when we actually will have cap space and there will be more than a few decent FAs available).

I'm kind of buying into the Mario Hezonja has figured things out narrative. I'd try to get him on a cheaper long term deal and give him to Johnny Bryant for a summer. Orlando can only offer a deal starting around $5.2M because they declined his option. Show Mario what we have done with Ingles and sign him to a 3/18 with a team option on the last year... I'm buying Mario stock right now.
