Bill and Jalen's Jazz Preview

Nah me ranting fills out more space. I'm just sharing how entertained I am by these rants :D
Well, here's one more for you :)

You are right about this getting more attention than it deserves and this driving the "story" up unnecessarily, but it still pisses me off. This is obvious homerism. I doubt he'd be even mentioning anything about Exum if they drafter Randle instead of Smart. Let alone if Utah drafted Smart and Boston drafted Exum.

The summer means ****, especially when you are talking about a prospect who was specifically drafted as a long term project rather than as an "impact now" guy and a guy who hadn't played in the last 8 months before summer league. How is it serious from "two of the most respected basketball critics" to be gloating about how Marcus Smart is going to kill him and Utah will regret getting him, because there are so many better players that were drafted after him, before he(or any of those other so much better prospects) have even played a single official NBA game? Not one! What did we see over the summer that we didn't know already about Exum? The one thing is that he's hesitant to drive to the hoop, but they didn't even mention anything specific about him - it was all generalities and "Can't wait for Smart to kill him". I doubt either of them has seen even a single full game of his and are probably going by stats only. So he had 3/3/3(or whatever it was exactly) WC in 12MPG. How much better was the next Kevin Durant/Magic Johnson for Greece with a full season of experience and hype behind him? You wanna know? 6/4/0(11% from 3) in 16MPG? So who had the better WC? Exum or Giannis? Are you worried about Giannis' prospects Bill or is he still the next super star? How about the best euro prospect in next year's draft Mario Hezonja? How did he fare with his several years of men basketball experience(something Exum has never been faced with)? Oh 13 minutes? No, not per game... for the entire championship! Worried about him? Are you going to have him out of your lottery next year, Bill?

I really wish people would stop overreacting... We will know what kind of careers we can expect from all those players in a few years time. Now is time for harnessing the potential and developing it into effective basketballing machines, eliminating weaknesses, strengthening the good points. If there's one thing those prospects have it's potential and time... well, unless Bill declares them busts before they've played a single game, that is...

/rant

P.S. I actually love both Giannis and Hezonja, but unlike Bill I understand that in international play coaches want results now and rely on experience and physical play to deliver that, something that 19 year olds usually don't have, thus much less talented players get more minutes simply because they can deliver NOW, at this WC, not 3-4 years down the road.

Haha thanks for the followup. Would've repped if it allowed me to.

I think the reason why they're cheap shotting Utah is simple. On the NBA landscape the City of Utah represents this weird unpopular nerd who does uncool things all the time.
So it's easy to cyberbully them. And most fans of other teams won't care and view it as entertainment.

Also it would be pretty boring if they hyped every rookie and lauded every roster and wished them a good record, improvement, the playoffs and whatever.

So they went all negative on Utah and they were like: Bashing on them leaves the least amount of salty fans if we just go by inhabitants of the city in which they play.

I don't think their projections and preparation were detailed or well prepared. But if Utah exceeds these low expectation by a significant margin at any point of the season, they'll backpedal and say they were wrong, they didn't see it coming and point out the positives.

bash simmons all you want, but he is the best writer right now and dude really knows what he is talking about. he is a true basketball nerd. yes, outsiders have us being a bottom feeder. they don't follow us 24/7 like we do.

we are very optimistic on our team and love what we are seeing from preseason. but at the end of the day it's just a preseason. we can easily be 23 win team. or surprise everyone by winning 40. fact is that no one really knows who we are.

but we will soon find out. i welcome haters. simmons can hate us all he wants. more hate means bigger the middle finger

He has a lot of knowledge as far as NBA history is concerned, and he's entertaining, but it's pretty obvious when he and Lowe do their podcasts that Lowe knows a lot more about basketball than Simmons. Simmons basketball analysis is generally quite awful.

Oh snap, Bill! What happened? So you would have taken Exum at 4 at the time of the draft but now Utah have screwed it up and would regret taking him at 5, cuz there are tons of players after him that are so much better?
You hypocrite!

This was also before he saw Exum play in FIBA and SL.

Not that Exum did bad, but it definitely calmed the hype on him.

Agreed, but Simmons doesn't really follow teams that are that bad, especially bad teams on the West Coast.

Only thing that makes me bad is when they talk about us losing "All-Stars" in Sap and Jefferson. The only reason any of those guys became All-Stars is because they played in the East. No offense to Millsap, he is great, but he would probably never be an All-Star in the West (maybe now that Love is gone though).

true - there are many people who knows more basketball than simmons. eh, all those ex-coaches for example. simmons is great at what he does. history, trades, evaluating talents, analogies, and etc. but he isn't x's and o's breaking down tape guy.

We've heard this before. Many here said any coach was an upgrade from Sloan. Were you one of them? How did that turn out?

We needed a change from Sloan and we didn't really get it from Corbin, we just got a worse version of Sloan that focused on out-of-date post play instead of PNR and Princeton/UCLA offense.

Yeah, at his core, Simmons is an entertainment/pop-culture dude. He is just happens to be a basketball fanatic who is an incredibly skilled writer who really knows his NBA history.

His Achilles Heel is his Celtics fandom. So ****ing annoying, but endearing at the same time. I wish I could be Bill Simmons, but with Jazz homerism.

yeah. red sox and pats too. it's nauseating.

Also curious to see how our offense translates in road games. It's always easy to push tempo in Utah where we have the altitude and a good fan base. It seems like we are always significantly worse on the road though. Can Snyder keep us uptempo on the road? That is the difference of us being a high 20's/low 30's win team to a high 30's/low 40's win team.

Quite frankly I doubt he's seen much of him, as evidenced by the general lack of details about what he thinks is wrong with him(this is not the only time he's talked about Exum busting in the last several months without EVER as much as sharing the simplest of analysis of what exactly leads him to think that). Just watch the video and tell me what those two said specifically about his actual game - ANYTHING specific, ANY detail! If you find me ANYTHING they said about his game I'd rep you for a month. Here's what they talked about throughout the whole segment about Dante:
-Bill is worried about "that Dante Exum thing"
-Bill is worried that "those guys who were drafted after Dante Exum are really good and the Utah fans are going to look around and they are going to see Marcus Smart, Julius Randle, Elfrid Payton, and they are going to think - why did we take this 18 year old kid who looks like a baby? [great, I think we have something here that is close to analysis of Dante Exum's game... "he looks like a baby"... well, kinda close]
-Jalen says he never played against elite competition...[well duh, nobody knew that... and especially Bill and Jalen when they put him #4 in their mock draft]
-Bill follows with - and on top of that all those rookies that came after him, are going to gun for him during the season(WTF? How is that even relevant?)... "Marcus smart is going to get really upset before that game... He's gonna try to embarrass him"[still waiting for ANYTHING about what actually made them do that segment]
-there's gonna be a problem when Steph Curry, CP3, Ty Lawson, John Wall come to town... there's gonna be a problem with his confidence, too...[ OK, maybe... that might have been a better segment for Clairvoyant Bill.]
-he doesn't know what position he is!!! Lol!!! Seriously? You are going to tell me he looked at more than 2 of his games and didn't think he's a PG? Seriously?!?!?!?!?!?

In a funny way I think most of the people here can make a much better case as to why Dante is going to be a bust than those two, even if we don't think he's going to be a bust(or we don't think we have enough information to know if he's going to be a bust).

Yeah, the whole point of him questioning Exum is that he feels like he has the biggest ceiling/floor of any player in recent history, so he openly admits he doesn't know much about him, but what he has seen hasn't told him enough to feel strongly either way.

The position debate is still a valid one. Obviously he has immense PG skills, but is he better off playing alongside another PG, or a SG? A lot of that will depend on how far he can advance his ball-handling ability.

The rookie competition is relevant because to the other rookies Exum is undeserving because he hasn't proved as much as they have and was picked higher than them, meaning they will get paid more and are probably perceived as better players by a lot of people based solely on draft position. I'm sure this is an actual thing because players are competitive. When someone is picked ahead of me in pickup basketball and I know I am better than them, it gives me added intensity and motivation to play better than them.

*Also, Smart and Payton played Exum in Fiba U19 games and outplayed him (if I remember correctly, could be wrong), that probably leads Smart to believe he is more deserving and he is probably eager to show this when they play again.*
