Burks

He may have been the most talented guy on the team even when Exum was playing.

I really hope that we see Exum and Mitchell on the court together. I loved the growing chemistry and attitude they started playing with by the end of UT SL. I want to see them hound opposing guards into oblivion.

They did seem to play well together. I hope it continues.

We just need to ban the word "talented" it means something different to everyone. It means draft position to some, basketball IQ to another, athleticism to yet someone else.
When someone uses it, I have no idea what they are referring to.

In this case it means someone who hits the coolest looking layups.

I'll clarify. I think Mitchell might already be a better all-around basketball player than Exum.

If you factor in defense, Mitchell was probably the most impressive guy in all of summer league, let alone on the Jazz. Hell, he might even rank up there in historical summer league performance (as much as that counts for nothing.) There is nothing about his performance in summer league at all that should cause anyone to tap the brakes on the hype train, other than the fact it was summer league.

That being said, I hope Burks does all he can to earn minutes vs. Mitchell. A serious competition there would be amazing.

I know it was just summer league, but I was worried about Dante and Donovan both trying to be PG's. SL proved they could share the ball. Have them come off the bench together. Push the pace. There are enough vet backups to rotate in until they drop. I'd even see what Griffin could do at SF if Thabo can't keep up. Play JJ in short bursts and rotate with Jerebko. At the 5, I think Gobert and Udoh can both run the floor. Last year, Gobert would often get a rebound or block and be the 1st one down the court. Used to drive me crazy seeing Hill or Mack walking (or casually jogging) the ball up the court.

For those Mean Girls Club-bers, with short-term memories, I ask you the following questions:
•. Why trade Alec BEFORE he's had the legitimate chance to be mentored by Johnny B, and Coached up by 'Dr Q ? This victimized, but talented, skilled and athletic playmaker's has crucial offseasons rehabbing most of the duration of Snyder's tenure! The elephant in the living room that nobody talks about (and am glad for it cause we don't want his state secrets divulged) is the fact that we hold an Ace-in-hand with 'Dr Q's brilliant, incredible, and elite-DEVELOPMENT of players. Why would we ever think of trading AB before he's had a full coupla HEALTHY years to be taught what Q can teach him!! Think J Ingles.
• Again, how have we all forgotten just how good this man-player is at the height of his game. I can only imagine what he can become when he's going to be given the chance to follow Q's regime and stay fit!! Here's what super star DWade had to say about Alec and whos played against him in more games than you and me (quoted a year and a half ago while AB was out with an injury) re: http://bit.ly/2wMvEXK (tjones sltrib art. Jan 2016 quoting DeWayne Wade).
•. Go back and read the comparisons on Alec vs DWade, and GET ENTHUSED
Alec's offseason work is off the charts--when he's not rehabbing. So once back to healthy, let's give him a chance. He'll come through--with Q directing his development!

I like your optimism. Good post.

QS used to do a lot of game-time development work with players, in his first year, when it was needed most. He has backed into a different mindset, working more on strategy and game planning and game adjustments.

Any "direction" to player development at this stage seems to also be systematic, cultural and strategic, with QS's minions doing most of the work.

I have a small sliver of hope for Burks, but unless there are injuries he will not play.

DM = Future MVP

I like Exum... my biggest concern with him is self awareness... his whole "I'm a point guard" mentality is troublesome. He's so unique he needs to swing in between multiple positions and fill the necessary role. I think Exum may surprise the doubters... I'm not his biggest fan by any means, but I think the small (sometimes tiny) flashes will turn into some meaningful basketball... I just hope he can avoid the nuclear mistakes he makes... his turnovers almost always turn into dunks on the other end.

Where has this guy been my whole life? Preparing to turn me gay, apparently, if Alec Burks was unsuccessful.

With the Exum injury, Burks may get more minutes at point guard. He looked hungry to prove himself in the first three preseason games.

13 ppg in 17 minutes (good for second best on the team)
17 minutes per game (only 8th best on the team)
5.0 Rebounds per game (tied with Favors for 2nd best on the team who got 2 extra minutes per game)
75% 3 pt FG% on 2.7 attempts per game is also a promising sign

It's a VERY small sample size and it's preseason... but Alec Burks has looked to have grown more than most of our players IMHO. Gobert, Burks, Bolomboy, Exum (bummer he got hurt), and Hood at moments have all looked to have added some things to their games more than others.

Coach Q even seemed to be warming on him when he was asked about Alec during the postgame that I heard. Although Mitchell and other players were given more minutes so far this offseason. I know it's early, but Fish and I took a bunch of crap for being Bullish on Burks this offseason. It's nice to see his form starting to come back.

A full healthy year for Burks is all that we should be asking for, his game will speak for itself.
You can tell that he's determined to show that he can have a solid spot on this team.

Zero mention of the fact that Burks' production has been against the deeper half of the opponents' bench... or that the opponents have been either the Suns or non-NBA teams.

Look, dude, everybody acknowledges that Burks is ahead of reasonable expectations. But let's not lose our head, emmk?
