Can the Dante Exum Experiment Please End

He is taking far more risks this season. Hes still passive, but his rookie year he was basically playing hot potato with the ball. He was afraid to make a mistake, and still is, but is taking more risks and messing up more as well.

So if he went back to playing hot potato with the ball again he'd have a much better +\- that's your summation ?

I honestly thought this was a spoof thread until I started reading some of the posts. Exum looked brilliant against the Nuggets - very assertive and decisive. He owned Mudiay last night. Fantastic slashing and finishing at the rim, often times off the wrong foot to fool defenders, beautiful alley oop to Gobert at the rim.

I'll be honest and admit that I'm still not certain that starting point guard is in the cards for Exum, at least in the immediate future with Hill's impact. But that doesn't take away from the fact that he's made huge strides this year AND is so versatile contributing at the wing as well as back-up point. Do we have a better defender in the back court? I don't think so.

I wonder if the detractors realize just how athletically gifted this guy is. How many young PG starters and understudies around the league have this guys speed and hops? Lavine is the only guy I can think of and he's more of a two than a one. I wouldn't trade him for MCW or Elfrid Payton or M. Smart or D. Russell or Hollis-Jefferson myself. He may never be a Westbrook or a Curry or a Irving but I never had those kinds of pipe dreams for a #5 pick out of high school. This kid's already made it whether you know it or not and is definitely contributing and helping this team. Anybody who doesn't see that either has unrealistic expectations or is way too impatient IMHO.

Don't think his hops are anything other than pretty average if that

The Jazz are losing games due to subpar PG play this season. This is not something that can be revisited, it must be addressed immediately. The ridiculous on/offcourt numbers have shown that Dante simply cannot help in winning games. Due to the constant injuries, the Jazz need a better backup plan than a player with no skills.

"The Jazz are losing games due to subpar PG play this season"

I'm guessing you haven't explained yourself properly, because I would have thought George Hill has played pretty well at PG this season.

Why do you continue to think Exum is the reason Jazz lost games this season?

Have you noticed that Hayward, Hill, Favours, Burks and Hood have all missed quite a few games already, this is probably a fair reason why the Jazz have lost games this season.

How lucky are the Jazz to have supporters like yourself!!

Exum is way too valuable to let go now. #1 we have no idea what his potential is. #2 we'd be selling low, and we never want to do that. #3 Hill isnt a given after this year.

Exum had a horrible game against the Heat. Isn't he entitled to a few? I thought he made a number of good plays against the Nuggets, and was attacking the rim. His passing was a lot sharper than the previous game as well.

This is what good teams do. They stockpile, and develop talent.

The guy is Shawn Livinsgton at least. Without SL, GS has zero titles. He was an xfactor a couple years ago with this length, defense and scoring off the bench.

There are a ton of players who just take a little bit to mature in terms of their game. Steph Curry got an entire college career and 4 or 5 pro seasons before he emerged.

Exum isn't Curry, but he deserves more time. Some of you are so impatient. And some of you just want to bitch so you see your name on another post. Of all of our young players, Exum needs to be groomed because his ceiling is so high.

Exum started out slow his first season and truly shined at the end of his rookie campaign. The video and the stats show this. I'm sure a lot of his issues are getting back confidence and the feel for the game. He is also being compared to G. Hill instead of Burke, but that will just give him a better goal of where he should be.

I'm not sure whether he will develop, but I've he definitely has the attributes to be amazing. It would simply be nuts to give up on him now.

Folks: X is coming off a serious injury and it will take awhile until he is fully recovered and the rust is shaken off. Ty Wallace and Page had a solid outing vs. the Spurs DLeague team.

Shaun Livingston has an impeccable midrange and post up game, two things I've never seen Dante do, so the comparison is puzzling.

He has shown more potential to be Curry (shooting 3's) than Livingston (posting-up and midrange).

Exum is all about projection. Since he had almost no basketball history before playing here, it allows the fans to imagine him to be anything they want, hope for, or dream about. He's Kobe! He looks like Penny! He plays like Livingston! Meanwhile his numbers (reality) look a lot like Diante Garrett.

serious question ... how do you reconcile that his +/- was good and the team won so much with him starting in his rookie year when he probably displayed far less skill ?

Joined the starting lineup at the same time as this guy:

His +/- numbers were good in March, when he was torching the league with his 4.9 ppg on 32% shooting, and 2 assists per game. His +/- went negative in April, when his ppg soared to 6.4 ppg on 38% shooting.

I wish he was good too, but the truth is he sucks, and he's probably a bust. Sorry.

He'll definitely be recovering for this entire season. During the second half of the year He should start to get much closer and next season he'll almost certainly be back to full health barring injury.

I was at the game last night, and Dante was probably the best player on the floor in the first half. Sure it was only the Nuggets, but he was putting a lot of pressure on the D and his defense was excellent. If I could choose one wing defender on the team in a crunch time situation I would choose Dante without question. If you can't see the potential not only to be a very good NBA player in the future, but also in his ability to be a valuable backup PG during this season then I think you need to reevaluate your own knowledge of the game.

The crazy thing that I see here is that people are still harping on his handle (it has improved immensely since his rookie season) and his aggression (again it has improved a ton. Look at his FT's to see a good example of how much more aggressive he has been). His defense has been good for most of the season, even though it isn't showing in the advanced stats. Advanced defensive stats are not incredibly reliable or valuable when used to determine how a single player is defending overall.

I've only been a lurker for a while here, so not sure if this was a troll thread or not. But legit basketball minds are laughing at people who think Dante is some kind of bust. He's gonna be a very good player.

Good post - thanks for contributing and welcome!

Perhaps it's his long arms but I'm not used to seeing point guards even at 6'6" do standing dunks. This article https://www.slcdunk.com/nba-draft/2014/7/3/5869689/nba-draft-2014-dante-exum-utah-jazz-gifted suggests he has a better than average standing vertical (#4 among 22 recent and current PGs). Also this was based on combine results when he was eighteen years of age, not exactly his physical peak compared to others at or close to theirs.
