If you post by the rules, which are available to all, you will have no problems. The moderation staff is neither obligated nor inclined to discuss or explain every decision that is made. Most posters seem to get along just fine in this system. If a real issue existed, I would suppose that it would negatively effect more than a small handful of participants.

I believe Franklin got an infraction for starting a thread about a book on How parents should deal with homosexuality. Am I right? What rule did that violate that we should be aware of?
I got an infraction for circumventing the filters on a word I didn't realize was filtered. Little things like that could add up over six months. All you would need is to get one infraction per month.

I don't see how someone can figure out the boundaries if we aren't informed when someone has gotten an infraction and for what reason.

You are informed when YOU have gotten an infraction and for what reason.

If it takes a poster more than four of those to figure out the boundaries, well then perhaps he or she shouldn't be here. Survival of the fittest, and all that.

Trolling.

I got an infraction for circumventing the filters on a word I didn't realize was filtered. Little things like that could add up over six months. All you would need is to get one infraction per month.

And yet 90-95% of the active posters do not have a SINGLE infraction or warning. Go figure.

Being frustrated with any authoritative system is bound to create some "feedback". Ultimately, our ideals about justice and rights are dependent on the common currency of social conventions, prevailing noms, the feelings and opinions even "authorities" fear just enough to pretend to respect.

That's why letting some agenda monkeys get the grip on public education or any other institution will always ultimately change the direction of development. Whether it is progress or relapse into babylonian autocracy is something you can really discuss only when it's not babylonian autocracy.

Hey, I need to get a message to Franklin. I want to eat out at that oriental joint in Sandy, or some "All you can eat" Chinese buffet. About next Tuesday I'll announce the meetup. Trout, Millsappa, anyone else wanna show?

He received the infraction for trolling. He posted in order to capitalize on the polarity of that issue. He essentially wanted to stir something up. If you genuinely believe he posted in order to generate meaningful discussion, you are fooling yourself.

This is a really weak argument. If you type a word that's in the filter, the filter catches it. If you alter it, it's filter circumvention. When in doubt, type it out. The filter will do it's job.

Again, the vast majority of posters don't seem to have a problem with this. If you're getting an infraction a month, face it, you're doing something wrong. Everyone slips up now and then. That's why you have to accumulate 5 before going bye-bye. 5 is a lot when you are not consciously trying to make trouble.

For the record, this style of engaging in a protracted and futile argument parallels Hopper/Aint, pretty much dead on.

Just sayin.

Edit: I was writing this post up while colton addressed the same issues. My apologies for the overlap.

That's a dangerous slippery slope to have mods divining motivations. All the topics people are passionate about and want to discuss are polarizing. This is just one example on how hard it is to determine where the line is even with available rules.

It was on a picture. I wasn't aware it was a filtered word until after it was too late. The thing about wisdom is you get it right after you need it.

Is that a warning or you just like to compare me to Hopper every chance you get?

I don't think it is futile. I've come away with a wealth of information.

No. I let 98% of chances go by. I just bring it up when I am particularly tired of your relentless yammering.

But the parallels are definitely there, regardless of who you are.

I can't recall having ever reported a poster/post. I figure if a post is inflammatory enough to get me upset at a name on a computer screen it's time for me to turn off the computer and go do something else.

Hey you! That should be a hoot. Tell those 2 hi for me when you get together. My internet acquaintance meet up days are over.

I've never reported a single poster. It's the internet people, I don't know you and you don't know me. Of course I'm going to say stuff to get a reaction out of people, because that's how I am in real life. Do I always mean it? Of course not, and my friends know that. I'm a sarcastic *******. You want people to be polite to each other and agree on everything, but that's just not realistic. You want to ban me for being vocal about my opinions? Fine, go for it. Can't see how that's tolerant either though.

Agree, no, but polite, or at least civil, yes. Not agreeing does not mean being an *** or a dick.

And yes, I've reported posts. Not too often, but I do if it is a repetitive thing the poster does. I generally will report language filters because I'm of the opinion that, with few exceptions, it's moronic to plead ignorance in not knowing how the filter works.

I think we're all pretty tolerant - the mods specifically and the board in general, but it's a matter of style and degree. Does your response attack the person or that person's opinion? Do you disagree in a way that is reasonably civil and respectful, or do you go off on an epithet-filled rant? Would you say in person what you'd write on the message board? Would you say it out loud in a public place, perhaps to a colleague in your office for example?

I'll be upfront here, one of my peeves is when poster A reports harassing posts (or PM's or rep comments) from poster B, and the mods determine that the behavior has crossed the line and is unacceptable and warns poster B about the behavior, but the harassment persists, so an infraction is issued. If the harassment continues after that point, I for one have very little sympathy or tolerance for the offending poster.

This is also one of those situations where it's difficult to draw an absolute line in the sand, as it depends to a large degree on the tolerance of each individual on the board. Some things are unquestionably unacceptable, but many things fall into a gray area, and this is where context can make a difference. And every little insult is not a vehement personal attack - - but a pattern of little insults can built up to become a personal attack.

oh, and telling another poster that they should kill themselves, whether it's naming them personally or naming a group of people they belong to is generally not an acceptable thing to say...
even if you're just quoting some famous comedian...

just sayin'

And the "can't we all just get along" thread has degraded into an argument. Oh sweet irony!!
