What's new

Game Thread Dec 22, 2022 07:00PM MT: Jazz vs. Wizards

Added to Calendar: 12-22-22

NAW has been good enough for long enough, and he's still young enough, that I'm starting to wonder what his next contract will look like. I think I'm to the point where I want to keep him. Him turning in to a rotation player is up there with Lauri turning in to an All Star and Kessler being amazing as the top unexpected and pleasant surprises for me this season.

Conley doesn't have the same legs post injury that he did pre injury. At least he's been hitting his floater lately. Maybe a long break is all he needs and he'll look better soon.

Please stop trying to take everything I say and dumbing it down to the lowest possible level.
You said he has a great net rating. And you said he sucks. I also think he has a great net rating and also think he sucks.
So I just agreed with you. I know you hate it when I do that. Im sorry for upsetting you with my agreement.

I mean if you look at 30 different stats for a player and 29 of them are terrible but one is really good then maybe the 1 good stat is an outlier and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Outside of one bad shot, Gay did exactly what the coach would have wanted him to do. He played solid positional defense and took open shots.
I mean i guess i could do that as well since his solid positional defense resulted in getting scored on often and the open shots didn't go in.

I'm OK with young players having to work their way past the Vets in our lineup. I think Kessler has finally surpassed KO and Sexton is closing in on Conley.

Moving past Gay isn't some big chore and should be pretty achievable. The fact we are still waiting on it is an indictment on those young players. Overall you just need to run Hardy's stuff and hit open shots. That is all he asks. Once NAW started doing that he got his minutes. When THT started his freelancing crap he got canceled. I assume our other youngsters still aren't getting what we are doing and Hardy isn't going to burn NBA minutes for them to practice.

Eh there is a few issues with this. NAW didn't start getting his minutes once he started running hardys stuff and hitting open shots. He got his minutes once injuries to other players of his position happened. Conley will not get moved past by sexton. I will put a guarantee on that. If conley is not injured or traded then im going to guarantee that he starts every game the rest of the year. When KO is back healthy again i think kessler goes back to his backup role and 22 minutes'ish per game. (though im less certain of that one as kessler is playing SO damn good. Still doubt KO's job is in jeapordy). Also gays gets his minutes regardless of the fact that he is the worst open shot hitter on the team. Simone hits shots much more frequently so the statement that you just run hardy stuff and hit open shots isn't necessarily true.
I agree moving past gay isn't some big chore and should be pretty achievable. Simone has already surpassed gay on the court. Not in minutes though. Im hoping when KO comes back simone gets gays minutes but Im not holding my breath.

He was trash on the defensive end. They were hunting him on back-to-back-to-back possessions.

They were hunting Markannen with Beal. Doesn't mean Markannen was bad.
But even if markannen were bad, he has more to offer. (he can make shots and hustle and play hard instead of lazy etc.) And yes Markannen wasn't very good defensively and often time isn't.

Markkanen helps in literally every other way. If the only thing Gay brings is his defense and he’s bad at it what is he really bringing to the table?

There I agree.

Overall he doesn’t hurt us any more on defense than some others do and he’s been a decent rebounder. It could be worse but also he could be so much better by just taking smarter shots on offense.

Like fish has mentioned before though his minutes don’t really decide the game for us so I’d rather them go to someone else who will or could be apart of our future.

NAW up until three weeks ago or so was playing like lukewarm lizard spit. He finally clicked and is getting minutes. Even if there is little chance of him or Sexton starting this year, they can still eat Conley minutes, which is what I think everyone wants. Eventually I would like to see Sexton getting the most minutes on the team.

Additionally, even if KO gets put back into the starting lineup, eventually Kessler is getting there too, probably sooner than later. Vanderbilt will come off the bench and KO will play PF. Jazz are just too deficient at D and rebounding to keep Kessler on the bench much longer.

Ans Simone has shown some shooting, but he still gets lost on both sides of the court the longer his stretch of minutes gets. I assumed that his years of Euroball would make him better at that, but I guess making the switch from star to role player is probably pretty difficult. The team doesn't revolve around him over here.

Both Tim MacMahon and Tony Jones have said recently during interviews on ESPN 700 that the Jazz view Sexton as a 6th man and not as their future starting point guard, so it's unlikely he will ever lead the team in minutes played.

Of course they were. We were willing to switch a 7 footer on a 6"4 SG. That usually leads to either open lanes or fouls, and Markkanen was the #1 guy they wanted to take fouls.

I'm not sure I agree with Hardy, but its a big vote of confidence that he thinks Markkanen can switch to a really good guard like Beal.
