Listening to sports radio yesterday as they discussed the fact that a current Western Conference GM has gone on record as saying the belief league wide is that Hayward is as good as gone. That was followed up by Spence Checketts saying he spent the weekend texting an individual that's somewhat in the know with the Hayward camp and that they also believe that Hayward has already made the decision not to return to Utah.
Yes, we can brush these off as mere rumors at this point, but if the belief amongst NBA GM's is that Hayward is a goner, you'd have to believe Dennis Lindsay is aware of this as well. More than ever, this convinces me that for better or for worse, the Jazz are swinging for the fences on a major trade come draft night. Since last offseason Dennis has in round about ways said multiple times that the Jazz are passing the point of asset acquisition and are at the crossroads of cashing in those assets in an attempt make a run at serious title contention.
If Hayward is indeed leaning towards leaving, the one wildcard that the Jazz still have to play is that maybe with some big enough draft night acquisitions, they can provide a roster for Gordon that's too good to pass up. The flip side to that coin is that maybe the Jazz believe Hayward's already moved on, so they try and use those assets to swing a big deal in order to keep this roster strong enough to continue its upward trajectory. Whatever side of the fence the Jazz sit on, I think we will see earth shaking, franchise altering moves on draft night.
