Favors returns!

Different situations but this makes me happy... wasn't like Favs begrudgingly took our money... he wants to be here. After last year's BS how can anyone be mad today.

Seems to me that a contract that size with an unguaranteed second year should be pretty valuable for salary matching should a trade opportunity present itself.

Good grief... I'm glad that we are keeping Favs, but even 15 would have been a pretty good increase. 3 here 5.5 for Thabo, who knows with Exum... I woulda liked some savvy this offseason. Maybe there still will be...

This was entirely savvy.

Favors deal was tactical and strategic. It's tactical in the sense that, if a trade presents itself where a team needs to offload a huge all-star level player or dump salary for great assets, we have an easier time matching salary. If Favors develops his corner 3, he becomes worth that contract and we just guarantee it. If not, we can simply let him go. This is Lindsey creating an asset, albeit small with the plethora of projected capspace next year, where none existed before. Dude ninja'ed a rabbit where we needed it.

It's strategic because we had to demonstrate we could retain our own talent after developing it. This is sign to the league and the lockerroom we can retain our talent once the UFA time hits. Derrick is also a fantastic influence on the locker room and if he's happy, it helps everything else flow. He also gets one nice payday with the possibility of more depending on circumstances. In that case, he plants his arse in the corner on the court and shoots until it falls this offseason. It's a good move all the way around. We risked nothing, gained a lot, and Favors got his deal. It's a positive-sum game ending.

Can NBA contracts be incentive laced? Like 1 mill for shooting 30%+ from 3?

Yes... but there are limits that amount is doable I think... it can only be a certain percentage of the deal (like 10%ish maybe I'm not sure).

I thought non-guaranteed contracts could no longer be used for salary matching?

To add, they're broken down into "likely" and "unlikely." Gobert's contract changed when some of his unlikely incentives were hit and became likely. If I remember correctly, likely incentives are initially counted against the cap and unlikely aren't when the contract is signed. If the unlikely incentives are hit, then there's some cap gymnastics that have to be performed.

During the season they can... because there is guaranteed money there... offseason they can't.

The contract is only valid for the guaranteed portion. So if the Jazz trade him at the deadline next year, the value towards the trade is the full guaranteed amount. It becomes worthless after the season as it's non-guaranteed. It only gains value in trades again once it's guaranteed. Basically, it only has 100% value in the season.
