Free Agent Rumors Thread

How valuable is cap space if no one wants to come here. We have a 30 year history of failure in bringing free agents here
1. Cap space can be used in trades.

2. Memo and Boozer were both free agent signings. The Jazz also signed Jason Terry and Corey Maggette to offer sheets. Yes, the Jazz probably won't ever sign a LeBron-caliber player, but (risky, potential) bargains come around every so often.

How valuable is cap space if no one wants to come here. We have a 30 year history of failure in bringing free agents here, but next year is the year I'm sure. If we can get parsons at 12 great... but it isn't that easy. He is restricted, unless they get Carmelo he isn't going anywhere.

Also none of those cap space deals materialized last year... Philly ended up getting 2nds for their extra space... awesome!

I believe an overpaid Hayward is a better asset than cap space we can't use... its not that hard to understand. If you don't agree that is fine.

It's not that hard to understand.

The jazz have signed big free agents in the past. The best? Probably not. But outside of just a few markets, you aren't going time ever have a chance at Lebron unless you win the lottery.

So what you're saying is nonsense.

Furthermore, you don't hamstring a franchise because you feel like you can't sign Lebron. Cap room is huge, in that we can still sign nice pieces, be a player in trade talks, and continue to remain a healthy and flexible franchise.

Apparently the AK47 debacle wasn't a good enough lesson for you. Or maybe you're just too young or dumb to understand. But that horrific contract cost us opportunities to upgrade our team, maintain valuable pieces, be a player in free agency and trading, pissed off fans and players alike, and set this franchise back for years.

If you want a repeat of that, then fine, go ahead.

We'll just have to agree to disagree. I just hope for you you aren't a part of any sort of business operation. Scary

I agree with one if you can find takers. I think what we get for a cap space trade will not be nearly as good as we got last year. My belief is Hayward is better than what we could get.

On number 2 Memo and Boozer were really unique opportunities and things like that could happen again, but we'd have to overpay in those cases right. They aren't considered bargains when you sign those risky ventures. Well why not overpay now, while we have ample space and are guaranteed an opportunity. I just laugh when people are like, but what if Marc Gasol might want to come here and we miss out.

GH is not a max player and I would vote to not sign him for max money. However, given our current situation and even the next few years if we do match a max offer it really doesn't hamstring us. This is different than what we did with AK because the new CBA makes this more reasonable. Be interesting to see what Cleveland really does and then what we are willing to do.

Name 5 quality free agents we have signed in the history of the Jazz. Doesn't have to be Lebron type players and you can go back into the New Orleans history if you need to, ready go....

This deal doesn't hamstring the franchise... we can move it before the trade deadline if we wanted to.

This isn't AK's situation. First its 4 years vs. 6 years... fairly large difference. AK's deal was only horrific because he couldn't play for half of it. Which was also the problem with Boozer's deal who is arguably the best free agent we have ever signed (we had to trick a blind guy to do that one). You can't assume that Hayward will get hurt... if Favors got hurt his deal would suck too.

We clearly disagree, but relax with the business operations BS... You don't know me at all.

Kent Bazemore is only 6'5 but he has a 6'11 foot wingspan. Hayward is 6'8 with a 6'8 wingspan.

His per 36 last year (Lakers only)

16 points per game
4 assists
4 rebounds
1.7 steals
45% FG%
37 3P%

Please tell me again why Hayward deserves so much money????

Unfotunately, I wouldn't put it past the Jazz to match. Further, if we take them at their word, they WILL match.

All I've seen is a rumor from an unnamed source. The Jazz have certainly NOT publicly announced that they will match Hayward at all costs.

Nice Thriller... neg rep for disagreeing with your opinion. So if DL matches this is he clueless too?

Name 5 years the Jazz have had any cap space to sign free agents. Nearly the whole time I've been a fan (22 years) they've been over the cap and have only had exceptions to work with.

Don't have historic numbers, but off the top of my head:

The year we tried to sign Terry and Maggette
The year we did sign Boozer Okur
The year we took on Gugliotta's salary
Last year
This year

Some year's may be a repeat, but I don't think so. Not sure on the Malone Stockton years... I was too young to pay attention to salary cap back then.

The year we took on Gugliotta's salary (2003-04 season - received the pick that turned into Gordo)

So...in the years they've had cap space, they've either signed quality players or exchanged cap space for picks. Sounds better than giving Gordo $16mm per year.

Yes. I KNOW they'll give up Wiggins if we just threaten to match the offer.
Best we could do in a S&T is maybe a future first...MAYBE.

Cavs are just as likely to call our bluff and say, "go ahead...match the offer sheet. We'll move on to the next option and keep our picks."

The best part of this is the Jazz have until at LEAST July 13th to match. They can go out and look at other options until then. Cleveland has to renounce some cap holds to clear space. Not sure how it works, but once Hayward is on the books and they submit the Irving extension, they'll be over the cap, IINM.

Yep, exactly what I was about to say.

So Okur is the best free agent we've ever signed, right? Boozer's contract ended up being not great, but not as bad as AKs. We got stuff in other year's but I don't see where those deals come from.... That would be my first choice I agree. I think the second best choice is to match, third best is to walk away with just cap space and nothing to use it on. Help me see what team needs to use our cap space and is willing to give something good for it.

Who is this HandHero gay?

Alright I'm good... clearly this isn't a place where you can have a differing opinion than the herd. When we match Hayward's deal this place is gonna suck anyway... Peace.
