Gordon Hayward - what's the issue?

Maybe this off season we will get a real shooting coach and our shooting will show a slight improvement for once. Hornacek=great shooter but not a decent shooting coach.

...let's hope he doesn't get the same type of coach Tiger Woods has to improve his game!

Usually the third year is when a player breaks out if they have all star potential. Outside of three point shooting, Hayward improved enough from his rookie year to give me optimism. If some of you want to rip him for his poor performance against the Spurs, its your choice, but pretty much everyone except Favors sucked just as bad.

After the All-Star break he averaged 14-4-3. I think it's fair to say he can easily improve those numbers.

How do you think it is possible? I doubt he is going to play more minutes next season as he already played way more minutes then usual due to injuries to other players in March and April. For a player to average 5 assists/game per season ball needs to be a lot in his hands, I do not see Jazz giving him so much reign and control of the ball. He is poor rebounder for his size so 5 reb could be very hard to get as well especially if he is played more at 2.
14pts/game certainly can happen, but again don't think it will be "easily".

Agreed.

I think his shooting issue is our offense. He seldom played well when it was Feed Al...stand...watch.

He scored a lot and often when we ran a motion offense, P&R and did not just feed the bigs.

CJ(I know he is out) stated that often times wings were told not to shoot 3's. That's ridiculous. Corbin can't coach.
It goes with out saying that a Pro must make shots. But you need to have their back.

Look at the spurs series....Ginobli had very poor shooting 1st 3 games. Pop, when asked said he was the least bit worried about it.
what happened, Game4 he broke out.

Take Hayward...I get a sense Wings were told to watch their shots. Hayward immediately worries about them more, out thinks himself and starts pressing.

Basketball for all these guys is a Psychology game. Most of them have insane talent or they would not be at this level. It is how to get at that talent that separates
the men from the boys at the coaching Level. That's why Phil Jackson did so well. He handled the mental end of the game.

Ty is very poor at the mechanics of the games (situational subs, play calling, overall offense)
Ty is horrendous at the mental motivational stuff.

Not to beat a dead horse but with Ty we will be no more than a 6 or 7 seed at best and an early out.

Even Hayward smiled when asked about Ty's communication skills. Hayward's answers everything perfectly like a book, so for him to slip like that tells
me it was try that Ty had major communications issues....

Remember the scene in Hoosiers before the championship game when Gene Hackman had his team measure the height of the rim and then the distance from the foul line to the baseline?

Confidence, confidence, confidence.

Hayward looked exactly like he did in December - trying to make the perfect shot and then hanging his head when he didn't. He needs to trust his skills and forget about everything else. He'll be fine - we all saw him mature as the season went on - now we just have to wait for him to mature as he gets more playoff experience.

Anyway, this is why I wanted the Jazz to make the playoff while they were still on the way up - this way guys like Hayward, Burks, Favors and Kanter can get a taste while the expectations were low.

Just thought his post bares repeating.

Also for the record I kind of feel Hayward is a borderline AS type player but due to his position will always be in discussion but wont get in unless the Jazz team has one of the top records or injuries. He is still a key cog and part of the core a glue guy that can tie in other players and do a little bit of everything that makes him more important than just his numbers.

This is 100% correct. As long as Al gets fed the ball, and then takes 10 seconds to do something with it, our wings will struggle. Hayward was great in the postseason for Butler, and I believe he will be again next time for Utah. He also will continue to get better at creating his own shot, and hopefully sooner than later, will earn respect from the officials so that when he gets fouled at the ends of games, they will call it. I envision him and Favors becoming an incredible pick and roll punch, cuz Harris I just don't think will ever be great at it. This is why I would approve a Steve Nash signing. Favors could be a dominant roller.
