Agree that Hayward wasn't an alpha, but the game was played/designed as if he was. Hood is definitely not, yet, and all you guys talking down Burks are wrong. Considering his availability over the last couple years, I have no problem with that.
 
To my mind favors is a bigger wild card. He was horrible last year and left a gaping hole. Can he get back to form?

I think Hood has potential to be a decent scoring option. Here are his stats from start of the season when Hayward was injured.

Points FGM-FGA 3PM-3PA
26 9-17 3-7
15 5-14 2-8
5 2-10 1-2
19 6-13 4-8

18 7-12 2-4
17.5 46.3% 42.4%

He also scored 18 points in game 4 against the Clippers when Hayward got sick. My only concern is injuries.

I don't think you could call him a cornerstone at this point. That's what the Jazz need to figure out. Also It depends what another team would be willing to give up. I think for the right offer everyone except Rudy could be traded.

I think I disagree with general opinion regarding Hood. As of right now, I think Hood is not a second-option kind of player, but a not very good first-option. I say so because, as a second or even third option, he doesn't seem to be able to score more efficiently than as a first. Regarding his future, if he can recover from the last campaign, which was supbar IMO, and perhaps reach a level close to Hayward's during the 14-15 and 15-16 seasons in terms of overall efficiency and productivity, he is worthy of a long-term extension. If he can't do that, management should consider trading him.
 
Rodney has to be able to drive and get to the free throw line, otherwise i think eventually Exum will be worth keeping more than him.
 
Honestly i would start Burks to increase his trade value so we can get something in January and slide Hood to 3. Ingles can back him up and JJ get mins both from 3 and 4. Hood should get used to playing 3 because if both him and Mitchell proves they are allstar level guys we will have to start them together in a year or two.
I prefer experimenting this year to put the pieces together correctly then barely making playooffs and get swept in first round.

I have confidence in our development staff to get Hood ready to take on a bigger role. But he's got a ways to go. Consistency, health and shooting efficiency are my main concerns. He also needs to improve his defense and playmaking. If he improves in those areas there is no reason to think he can't put up similar numbers as Haywood was eventually.

However I would not rush to extend Hood or Exum under our current circumstances. We need to see how they play and how they respond with bigger roles. Extending them early takes away our cap space for next offseason. And we need that cap space. We have to find a few all stars to put around Rudy within the next few years and that cap space is one of our few ways to do it. We can't jump the gun and blow the space on Hood and Exum before having a better idea of what they will become. We might have to send them to RFA next summer just to have all of our options open. And if a great trade comes along at the deadline involving one or both then you have to consider it.
 
The problem I see with Hood is, if he isn't shooting well he's not doing much else. He needs to have something to fall back on. Drive to the rim if your shot isn't falling, although admittedly through my eyes at least, his drive game can look awkward. I think he needs to develop a solid to good defense/drive game to fall back on. I don't think he'll ever be a great playmaker for others though, and perhaps he doesn't need to.
 
At age 23 in his 2nd year in the NBA Hood was a better or equal player to Hayward was at 23 in his 4th NBA season.

Hood injured his knee last season and it obviously set him back. He did step up his defense from the previous seasons to be more of an average defender.

The question is can Hood continue to develop like Hayward did? Is our staff capable of helping him continue to improve?

Hayward at 25 put up 19.7 points per game on 43% shooting. I would like to see Hood get 16-17 points per game but on more efficient shooting than that. Can he? If so we filled in for Hayward pretty nicely.
 
I heard that Hood has been molding his offseason training after the offseason Hayward had last year. It seems like Gordo did leave some impression on this team as far as thats concerned.

Rodney's first three years (two, really) exceeded Hayward's. He's had an impact since he was a rookie. I think Hayward's defense stood out more in his early career. But Rodney has some moves that you don't expect from someone with so little experience. We didn't see as much of it this year and with the health stuff I'll give him a mulligan for the season. I don't know WTF happened with the playoffs. I (and most of us) saw Hayward's ceiling as a Robin to someone's Batman. This year, especially the playoffs, settled that argument that Hayward really took that leap. It took Hayward seven seasons and we've only had Rodney for three. This year he'll have all the resources, in addition to a distributing point guard. This opportunity is his to lose and I believe he'll make a big jump. I'd extend him now. Any good FA next year is restricted and he may be one of the best FAs next summer.
 
According to Spotrac, Hood has a cap hold of $7M and EXum $15M next year. So Utah has only about $5M in cap space if they renounce all other holds (Favors and JJ) - unless Burks can be offloaded. We better hope Hood turns into a stud and Exum isn't far behind. Lindsey also needs to turn Favs and Burks into a starting PF at the deadline.

He and Favors were both starting to become good individual players, and still couldn't figure out how to win until Rudy came along. Rudy believed they could win and he made every else believe it as well.

I don't consider Haywood to be an alpha at all, but if he is, then Rudy is a super-turbo-alpha running on jet fuel.

Well this is what we've been saying about Hayfart all of these years...if we could turn a 3rd tier sissy boy into a #1 option, why can't we do it with Hood?
