It's Time For a True Direction

People need to pump the breaks on Mitchell being a star. He's a 2 who hasn't shown he can shoot efficiently or attack the rim. I can't think of one star wing who couldn't do either.

Can't attack the rim? Sorry, but you're way off on that take.

I'd say $16 is the floor for a healthy Hood.

I don't know... he's basically a spot shooter who can be a secondary/tertiary ball handler... adequate defender who has had a hard time staying healthy. He's older than some think and basically is what he is.

He's in the Allan Crabbe, will Barton, KCP tier... I don't know that those guys are getting the brinks truck... I'd say he's 12-18ish if he can stay consistent... any health hiccups and he's getting Norman Powell, josh Richardson, contract range.

Him getting big money was predicated on taking a step forward and staying healthy... he's not done that yet... still might but not super hopeful.

Agree. Hood really had to blow up to get the $20Mil/yr he was chasing. If he continues like this Id let him go if it costs us more than $16Mil/yr over 4 yrs and go all in on someone like Covington. I believe the 76ers can only pay him $12Mil/yr.

Hood has shown to be an excellent PNR scorer and mid range player. Sure you can say health would drop him down to less than starter money but you could also say a few more FT attempts a game could boost him to 20 mil. It works both ways, it's not just down.

I think the Jazz are in a good position to evaluate for the next 3 months. Saying "it's good Hood is dropping in value" is a little counterintuitive. If he's just not producing, I think it could help in the decision to tank or acquire assets. If he can get to the rim, he may be a 20 ppg scorer in which could really help this team and the Jazz would gladly use cap space to resign him.

If Hood and Favors start playing how we have seen flashes of, then the decision gets a little more complicated.

Not really, IMO. Favors is an unrestricted free agent that has sent signals that he's out several times over the years and doesn't fit with Gobert who is a consistent player, all-world defensive force, and under contract for as long as just about anyone in the NBA is. Gobert will be here and Favors is very likely to leave, whether he plays well or not.

Conversely, if Hood is mostly a spot-up shooter and decent off-the-bounce in a pinch and has his heat check moments, then that's fine. The Jazz own his rights. The only scenario the Jazz need to be concerned is if they think someone is going to throw a stupid offer at him, at which point, you see what the market is right now. But considering the upcoming market and his unimpressive play so far and on a bad team that is asking him to use possessions, I'm not sure that offer is coming.

The three things that matter going forward are:
-Gobert
-Mitchell
-the acquisition and development of talent to build with in the future, and with those two in mind.

I am reiterating my desire to add Portis to this team. In lieu of the perfect Quin Snyder 4 that may or may not ever come, a patchwork of Portis and Ingles seems pretty good to me.

Its not about saying "its good hes dropping in value" its realizing that there is a silver lining to Hood not producing as many expected and that trading Hood because he under-performed is not our only option and will probably be short sighted if it does eventuate.

It gets complicated in the sense that we wouldn't be losing games at the same clip. You're a destination that has to build through the draft or trade and letting Favors walk isn't as cut and dry, even on this team, if he is actually 2015/16 good.

But sucking and then signing in the hope that he won't suck isn't a recipe for success... If Hood really continues this trend, drops his value below $16 million, I don't think that's a good thing. At that point I'd rather use that cap space to acquire assets.

Ah.

Gotta love the anti-tankers saying its a bad idea ever year. Totally ignoring the irony of us having this same conversation practically every year.

Each to his own. I still beleive Hood can be a great scorer, he's just in over his head atm. Get him back to being that 3rd option and he'll be burning up the nets.

No. But id have Hood at $14Mil/yr all day.

Rofl at even this much. Covington should be signing his extension with Philly today about this much and he blows Hood away. And he's really only count about 10M against the cap per year once the extension kicks in.

I wouldn't pay Hood more than about the full MLE.

Hm, whaddayaknow.. I stand corrected.

Yeah, it's not typically described that way. And the rule doesn't make much sense to me, I would have made it a strict "must have a first round pick at least every other year", like people think it is. But such is life in the NBA.

Yeah, the conversation about tanking has been rough the past couple of years. Last year especially. P_H_E_W!
