It's Time For a True Direction

I think Denver does it for these reasons:

#1 - they have the worst PG situation in the league. Adding Rubio to a more balanced team than we have actually makes Denver a playoff team.

#2 - their window is now. They spent a ton in Millsap and they have been irrelevant for a while. Chandler, Arthur and Barton are role players at best. Rubio, though flawed, is a proven starter.

#3 - Burks. I dont think this is very strong in the trade, but the Nuggets are a business. If they can sell the idea that Burks is "coming home", maybe that sells to some people. And they are a team that could use more wings.

As for LA, it just all depends on how they see Ingram and Deng. The Deng situation is a distraction as is the summer 2018 chatter. Not to mention the Lonzo circus. Eliminating one distraction while actually making the team better for Lonzo right now is a smart move. They make the playoffs more easily with Favors and JoeJ than Ingram and Deng. That helps in the 2018 summer pitch too.

Barton and Chandler are the best players in the trade and it's not that close. AB is not an asset. Their PG situation isn't bad... long term they need Murray to play point. Rubio causes different kinds of issues and complicates their cap situation next year.

Add in the seconds and it's horrendous value for them.

I didn't realize how well Barton is playing.

What about Burks for Darrell Arthur and a 2nd (the GS 2018 2nd they have)? Arthur serves them no purpose but Burks is a needed wing and maybe puts a few extra seats in the stands. The 2nd doesnt have a ton of value, but it has a little.

For us, we get some PF depth and save a few million next year if Arthur picks up his player option.

The change of course should be obvious without Gobert. Sell off all pieces that are not part of the long-term future of the team for the best future assets and play the rookies a ton. I don't want to repeat myself from the previous threat about tanking, but yeah... IMO that's what we need to be doing - lose a ton of games and collect future assets in the process.

I agree with you, but I don't think we have to lose in the process. Guys like Rubio, Favors, JoeJ, and maybe even Hood can be used to get a long term piece even if we have to take back salaries in the process. Its not like we can lure awesome free agents with cap space anyway.

We don't have to just sell. We can sell AND buy strategically. And we can continue to compete.

I think if you can find the right move to bring in a star player that would be a better bet than going the draft pick route. If that's all you can get for Favs/Hood/filler then I'd probably still do it, but I'd prefer to try everything to get a high level offensive player who fits in our system. I was banging the drum to go get Fournier last year, but now he might have played too well for that to be realistic. But the direction needs to be getting guys that fit perfectly with Rudy/Mitchell moving forward.

Fournier would have been great. Simmons would have worked. Others too, but we now have to find a trade that makes sense long term.

In my opinion, you go all in for one of these guys:

Kuzma
Ingram
Jabari Parker

Both the Bucks and Lakers have more important young players on their roster than these above. They also have some atrocious contracts that might threaten their remaining roster and short term goals. All three of the guys above fit with Gobert and Mitchell for the next 5+ years. We have the assets and should be willing to take the contracts necessary to make a move.

I wonder... if December kills us(very possible) and we go 1-15 in that stretch... Maybe DL will give up and truly go after the tank. How bad do we need to be by end of the year in order for DL to realize this is the best course of action?

We are 6-8 right now. We have 23 games until the end of December:
@ NYK
@ BKN
@ ORL
@ PHI
vs CHI
vs MKE
vs DEN
@ LAC
vs NOP
vs WAS
@ OKC
vs HOU
@ MKE
@ CHI
@ BOS
@ CLE
@ HOU
@ OKC
vs SAS
vs OKC
@ DEN
@ GSW
vs CLE

How many do we win of those? Do we win 5? Lets say we do... then our record will be 11-26... Is this enough?

This will be the moment of truth IMO. This is when you will have the chance to try to go for a top 5 pick or not because the schedule becomes much easier in JAN and you might be getting Rudy back...

Great thread. Love all the trade scenarios.

Losing a ton of games the way we did last night, with Donovan honing his craft all the time as the main guy to try to bring us back, might be really good for his development. Playing from behind allows him to kind of play with abandon.

Wins and losses this year mean nothing in the grand scheme, or should I say, wins mean nothing. We just need some good wins here and there where Rudy and The Don shine until we pick up their Jeff Hornacek.

How the winds of fortune can change in a moment, and that moment now appears to be when Hayward made his decision -- though he probably made it a good deal before he said he did. If only he had made his wishes known earlier, it might've prevented this tank situation the Jazz now are in. Looks like we need a complete roster overhaul. I'd keep Rudy, Mitchell, and Ingles. Exum is a question mark. Everyone else should be made available. Possibly players like Udoh, Sefalosha, and Jerebko could be kept as bench guys. I think Joe Jesus is still solid and could be used for some good assets. Whatever the case, I'm sure DL has a better handle on this than me.

I prefer to think of the winds-of-fortune moment being the acquisition of The Don Dada. Imagine the position we'd be in without him.

We are pretty much lockstep here... I think we get the win against BKN and the two CHI games and maybe one more surprise win.

If we then move a few pieces for assets our team will not win a lot.

I don't think we do the Bledsoe with Rudy but with a soft tissue injury you hold him out until he is 100% without a doubt... conditioning and all.

Exactly... even if we didn't get Doncic or Porter get a few more first rounders and get some opportunities to find a Kuzma, Jokic, or even a Rudy or a Hood.

Just please don't get a guy like Bradley... I'm sure he's a good player but that pick makes no sense with the direction of the league and the quantity of cheap good big men available.

Has Dennis Lindsey spoke recently? I don't recall seeing him quoted in an article or post since before the season started.

He does a Friday afternoon radio interview each week on The Big Show (1280 AM/97.5 FM in Utah). See here for archive: http://www.1280thezone.com/?s=dennis+lindsey

Looks like they missed last Friday, or at least it's not popping up in that search, but you can listen to the interviews from the previous weeks.

You are wrong... the rule only looks forward. Look it up if you like.

Teams are restricted from trading away future first round draft picks in consecutive years. This is known as the "Ted Stepien Rule." Stepien owned the Cavs from 1980-83, and made a series of bad trades (such as the 1980 trade mentioned above) that cost the Cavs several years' first round picks. As a result of Stepien's ineptitude, teams are now prevented from making trades which might leave them without a first round pick in consecutive future years.

The Stepien rule applies only to future first round picks. For example, if this is the 2017-18 season, then a team can trade its 2018 first round pick without regard to whether they had traded their 2017 pick, since their 2017 pick is no longer a future pick. But they can't trade away both their 2018 and 2019 picks, since both are future picks.

I really don't understand what you are trying to say. If you traded away your 1st round pick in 2017, you cannot trade your 2018 pick away.

Yes you can, Handlogten's Heros is correct. See the post just prior to this one.

Could someone explain to this noob (me) how the new lotto system will work and how it deters teams from tanking in the future? Probably be some rep in it for the person that does.

What is the real cost? We are headed for a frustrating season that ends with us playing guys that won't be here next year

Could someone explain to this noob (me) how the new lotto system will work and how it deters teams from tanking in the future? Probably be some rep in it for the person that does.

There 2 main changes: the odds for getting the top picks have been lowered for the worst teams and the lottery balls have been spread out among the other teams in the lottery. Here are the new odds vs the old odds:

Second change is - before there was a lottery just for the top 3 picks... now the lottery is expanded for the first 4 picks.
