Jazz going after OJ Mayo

He's only 25, and yet every single team that has had him, hasn't wanted to keep him.

This is a big clue people.

The real number people need to look at is that he's now five years into the league. This is not so unlike everyone clamoring to write off all of Jefferson's fatal flaws because of his age and this hilarious idea that he's never had a coach before (or at least never had a coach that told him to run or pass a basketball, ever).

The old and "washed up" Martin still destroyed Mayo on every measurable metric last year. The big one you want to pay attention to is true shooting percentage. 60% compared to 55%, not even in the same ball park. Will some team overpay Mayo at 9 million a year? Possibly, no shortage of dumb GMs out there.

Yeah, coming off the bench. Mayo started for Dallas. I'm telling you, if the Jazz and KOL are going after him, is a money ball call.

OJ Mayo, number 34 for the Utah Jazz.

I am not a huge Mayo fan but he is a better defender and passer than Kevin Martin. Also after the post season Mayo started getting the the free throw line much much more.

I would take Mayo over Kevin Martin any day.

Let me put it this way...apparently Mayo is a decent passer for a SG, puts up good shooting numbers, plays decent defense, and he's only 25.

So why aren't teams scrambling to sign him? I think y'all are missing a huge clue here.

Looks like not everyone is missing the clues... Here is a piece of an article on the Wolves looking at O.J. (or perhaps why they should stop looking at him).

"It strikes me that Mayo is exactly the kind of player Flip liked when he coached the Wolves: guys who look good taking mid-range jumpers. He's a poor defensive player who doesn't get to the free throw line often enough to make him a particularly efficient scorer. Wins Produced shows Mayo as a consistently below average performer, with 2012-13 being one of his strongest seasons because he bettered his career shooting percentages. He still couldn't post an above average score."

*Ahem*

Looks like you just need someone to make him realize where the holes in his defense are. Someone to actually scrutinize and challenge him publicly.

OJ played really well for the first part of last season. It was once the Mavs fell out of playoff contention that his performance declined. Probably he stopped working so hard.

I'm neutral on whether or not we sign him.

Hmmm...and the jazz will only be in playoff contention briefly, because every team starts off the season 0-0.

If this weren't true he would be out of our price range. Don't think anyone is missing clues. He fills a need that we have without hurting what we are building. And we might have good bigs playing defense behind him

I love the fact that he is young still, and he can be had without giving anything up. If the jazz had a starting lineup of:
Burke
Mayo
Hayward
Kanter
Favors
You all know that is a very good, young group to build around. It's by far the most balanced lineup the jazz have had in at least 10 years.

At this point, it may make strategic sense to see how Burks is coming along. A player's third year is an important barometer, especially for a guard. If Burks starts out strong, then getting another shooting guard is less a priority. The thinking is probably that Jazz need another scorer out on the floor who can create his own offense.

We can wait and preserve our cap flexibility to make moves during the season.
