Jazz going after OJ Mayo

The other issues are if the Jazz sign too many free agents how are they going to take on contracts at the deadline and how are they going to tank to get a high draft pick?

Just because a player can score doesn't mean he's any good. There's a reason Mavs fans hated him.

This would be a horrible move.

I will say my biggest concern with OJ:

He enhanced his game year by being smarter, but was it all because of contract year?

I see his contract floor at 7 mil/year and his ceiling 10 mil/year.

I would be down for 2 year 20 million deal.

I would be down for a 3 year 24 million deal.

You could easily have a 3 wing rotation of Burks,Burke, and Mayo. I know everyone thinks Hayward is a SG, but he plays SF just as well (because really, positions don't exist).

Positions don't exist really on offense your correct. But defense you couldn't be farther from the truth. SF's in the league right now are much stronger and longer than the shootings guards in the league. Hayward has no chance against the bigger SF's. He gets pushed around. And his lack of wingspan is also a problem against guys who are much longer than there height.

If we do sign him i hope it is really front loaded. Where we pay him like 12 million the first year and 10 million the 2nd than have it drop down to 6 so when we resign our core players it won't effect our cap space. Right now we can over pay players for this year.

Mayo is a bit of a chucker but to be honest the Mavericks sucked last year. Nobody could really score. Dirk wasn't healthy. Kaman looked horrible. Collison underachieved. And Marion is not someone who can create his own shot.
Now I am not defending him fully but he needs to have better shot selection. If we front load his contract than I am all for it. If his contract stays around 8 million a year towards the later parts than I say NO.
Burks and Hayward both get to the free throw line at a decent rate especially for their age and lack of credibility from refs. Mayo fades away from contact and getting to the free throw line. Which does work well when your playing playoff teams.

He's 25. He could be an asset.

I'm not opposed. I don't want to overpay him though. We really don't need to give big bucks to a guy who we'll be wanting to pay someone to take in a year.

Be prudent.

Mayo isn't a difference maker. We cannot afford to sign him long term to a really large contract. However he is inefficient enough to help make tank job not look intentional.

I'm not thrilled with the decision to chase OJ, but if we front load the deal ($12 million up front) and average the next 2-3 years at $6 million I could live with it. It's not as much that I don't think OJ's a good fit, it's more the fact that he'll take the bulk of the minutes at SG.

many years of nonsense about mayo is being perpetuated in this thread

hes gotten a terrible rap, that hes undeserving of, and the grizzlies (like Hasheem Thabeet) did this players value a great disservice, with their usage plan, clearly the Grizz didnt have Mayo's back once they determined he wasent what they had hoped for.

if the jazz land OJ mayo you will be wowed at his skill level, this player rises to the occasion, clearly this player is better than consensus... hes had attitude issues, but watchout if hes happy and confident, Mayo is supremely skilled, also hes cold-blooded

(he can actually dribble and pass much better than any of you would credit him for)

overpaying? you guys make it like this is a mid-level player, this is a multi dimensional SG............ Randy foye cant defend anymore, he made 2,500,000 last year. Raja Bell made 3,400,000 last year, Mo Williams was paid 8,500,000 his minutes averaged out to way under 10mpg... and you guys want mayo on sale...?

the jazz historically have had short arms and deep pockets when it comes to FA's of the ilk of Mayo, hows that worked? (and how much have they really saved doing so?)

also the $1,000,000 question everyone always avoids...

what are the BETTER options?? Tyreke Evans? JJ Reddick for big $$? Tony Allen (lol)?? Monta Ellis???, maybe some would prefer to pay Andre Iguodala big $$? Kevin Martin?? giving Alec Burks 30mins?

actually JR Smith at half the price of Mayo i think is excellent value, next year...

Mayo could lead this team in scoring if Al is gone... teams that dont play D, like Houston and Golden State are EASY pickins for him

You also have to understand, by signing players in free agency, the Jazz gain assets to use in a future trade. It's a way to build the team's overall player value/equity.

ok first remember smoke screens. the jazz could be throwing their name at every free agent just to make it look like they are trying to win now. especially for season ticket holders. not saying this is happening just saying it is potential

second we are fans evaluating players. what is important is how the jazz view the player. sure I think Hayward is a better 2 then 3. I think Burks is a pure 2. if the jazz feel Hayward is a 3 and burks is a combo guard great bring in mayo.

Burke
mayo
Hayward
favors
kanter

with burks first person off the bench I can live with that.

Finally a voice of reason. Would love to see OJ with the Jazz. Burks can back up OJ and Burke.

What if we sign him to a one year Foye-esque deal? His Mavs deal was only one year. Watch him start and use our team to boost his financial marketability next year. Last years situation all over again. How long would he sign here?

Put my on the wanting OJ bandwagon. My only hesitation is a prefer hayward at the two but I can live with him at the 3 if we have OJ. I don't want burks as our sg, I'd rather see him as our backup combo guard. OJ is NOT a ball hog like a lot of people are saying. Hes still young, and does a little of everything and feels a need.

agreed! I think that he would be a great fit.

foye was looking for a niche (playing time) over maximum dollars, you think the OJ Mayo situation is similar? i think OJ mayo has carved out his own Niche and other teams are drooling to fit him into their plans

does this scenario take into account that their will be other suitors, bidding up the price? or is it simply based on hope for a best case scenario?

do you think the 'numerous' suitors for OJ Mayo is a smokescreen from his agent??

and hes really backed into a corner due to low demand?

what if my aunt had a !@$%? would she be my uncle?
