Jazz going after OJ Mayo

Per 48 minutes OJ Mayo takes less shots and averages more assist than Hayward.

Not at all saying Mayo > Hayward, but to call Mayo a ball-hogging SG who is comparable to Al Jefferson is kind of false.

Its besides the point. Think bigger picture. Bringing in Mayo is a mistake. I promise you that.

They are trying to re-sign him. They just want Howard first. I've read the Mavs can probably go up to 6 mil per year, which would probably too little to keep Mayo. I think Mayo will get at least 8 mill per year.
$7.8 is my final offer.

Great, a SG version of Big Al

Wow.. incorrect.

Mayo is an inconsistent and inefficient player. A chucker with a ton of talent that won't change his game. Not a team player.

Would be a distraction on our young team.

Definitely no!

I think that was a bit unfair.

well, mayo is not the worst case, dude can play some ball, but i would try to get burks a fair chance though

That was my point.
If we had been playing burks for the last 2 years then we would know if he sucks and then I might think this is a good move

Agreed Burks should be playing more. I just think the mind frame that we have a young player on our team means we can't go out and sign another player at his position who is better than him, is ridiculous. I don't see how we can't have both players and give them both ample minutes, especially through the use of the backup PG minutes.

45% FG shooting and 40% 3pt shooter is inefficient? Wow.

He doesn't attempt as many FTs as he should, but I wouldn't really call him inefficient.

He was good during the first half of last season, but didn't end that well. Will be interesting to see what he gets offered.

He was amazing the 1st quarter of the season, pretty good for the next 2 quarters, then really flopped in the final quarter.

How much salary do the Jazz need to offer next year to make the minimum? Jazz have a ton of money to spend and need to spend it on someone.

For reference, as of right now, Marvin Williams will be our highest paid player next year. Let that sink in for a moment.

I think 24 million.

ok first remember smoke screens. the jazz could be throwing their name at every free agent just to make it look like they are trying to win now. especially for season ticket holders. not saying this is happening just saying it is potential

second we are fans evaluating players. what is important is how the jazz view the player. sure I think Hayward is a better 2 then 3. I think Burks is a pure 2. if the jazz feel Hayward is a 3 and burks is a combo guard great bring in mayo.

Burke
mayo
Hayward
favors
kanter

with burks first person off the bench I can live with that.

I don't like this at all. While I think Mayo has matured some as a player in Dallas, that highlight vid didn't do much more than convince me he's not somone I want on this team. I know he was feeling it that night but taking pull up 3's with 18 secs on the shot clock and bringing the ball up the court then dribbling for 12 secs without a single pass is not how I think this team will win going forward.

I think on a diff Jazz team he'd be great at this point in his career, but not as presently constituted. Play what we have and add a few vet backups to fill spots. Play out the season and see what we have. Worst case the kids do ok and we don't get a great pick. Well, we still have money to spend going forward. Mayo would be a stop gap that would put as right back in the middle again.

Nothing against him, just don't think it fits a real philosophy.

Can someone tell me why Jazz Management is eager to not give Burks a chance to succeed? Does he have a bad attitude or something? What am I missing?

Jack? Really?

There's a reason his name isn't Jarret Dish.

I've always thought he's been a decent point. Shot slightly higher % than Mo Williams last year and split time with Burke seems plausible. 3 year contract seems fair and flexible for if and when Burke is ready to be a full time starter.

Jazz management great at drafting.

Retarded at everything else..

Just the opposite not too long ago. Free agent strategy for the Jazz should be to "go hard" after all mid-tier FA's, but stop just short of signing any of them. Drive up the price for other teams so cap space gets used up.

I'm okay with Mayo. The Jazz haven't had a legit scorer at shooting guard in a long time. I think people have forgotten what one looks like. Mayo isn't an All Star, but he's the next best thing. The Jazz need a scorer on the wing, and OJ is probably the best option right now. He's also a decent asset to pick up and trade later.

The Jazz are losing Mo, Earl and Foye. Burks can get the back-up PG minutes, plus 15 minutes at SG. That's close to 30 minutes per night.
