Jazz going after OJ Mayo

The Jazz are a much better team when sharing the ball and helping each other. I just don't think Mayo will help us do that. Creating your own shot is a good thing, until it comes at the expense of a better one. With Favors and Kanter needing to learn to dominate the paint, the last thing we need is a wing with selfish tendencies. Just my own 2 cents.

What other wing talent is there in free agency? Remember we've got a bunch of roster spots open and Marvin Williams is out for a while.

There are better Mayo's out there, (the clinic, mayonnaise, cinco de mayo)
BUT, OJ Mayo is a diva and a ball-hog!
He had this attitude when he was a collegiate star and still has it, though he has proven nothing and has hitherto had a lackluster career!
No NO NO

Put my on the wanting OJ bandwagon. My only hesitation is a prefer hayward at the two but I can live with him at the 3 if we have OJ. I don't want burks as our sg, I'd rather see him as our backup combo guard. OJ is NOT a ball hog like a lot of people are saying. Hes still young, and does a little of everything and feels a need.

Millsap and OJ would be legit. Burks proved he could play PG well for 10-15 minutes when Mo was injured

PG: Burke/Burks/Tinsley
SG: Mayo/Burks/Hayward
SF: Hayward/Carroll
PF: Millsap/Kanter/Favors
C: Favors/Kanter/Gobert

I would not want to give them long-term deals (maybe 2 years) unless they do well

Great post. Well said.

What would Mayo think if he looked up in the rafters and saw no championship banners?

Ordinarily I'd support this move. But I'm hoping the Jazz follow the "let the young guys play a ton and preserve cap space for a 2014 draft pick/FA run" philosophy, so I'm not a fan.

This is the main reason I don't like it, but there's also the whole "even if we were a contender right now, would we really want to overpay for a chucker?" thing.

There will be a stellar player available at 10.. team changer.

I hope you're right. Because I don't see the Jazz even just playing the young guys being absolutely terrible. Then again though that's the kool aid optimism of the new season I'm still chugging.

I know I will probably be burned at the stake like a heretic but isn't Mayo the better player?

There is no way to know for sure since ty corbin has not ever let us get a really good look at what burks can do.

Sometimes who we target in trades and free agency baffles me. I view this somewhat akin to building a house and before doing drywall and finish work you move your couch and bed in. The obligatory response to questioning the timing is "dude WTF we're going to need a couch!" Basketball reasons aside, even from a business/financial standpoint this is a head-scratcher. Post-draft there's a lot of excitement among the fanbase, especially when contrasted with the past two years. If they committed to playing the young five and gave minutes to hustle guys like DMC and Evans, there's going to be good attendance and lots of interest irrespective of our W/L record. To have that kind of a guarantee coupled with one of the lowest salaries in basketball positions then to make a killing this year. Mayo, financially, wouldn't add anything to excitement or wins that would translate to increased revenue.

From the basketball side this is still just as silly. What's our goal next year? If the FO thinks the fanbase wants to be titillated with a possibility of squeezing into the postseason then great. Signing him would signify the end of the Burks experiment (which was never an experiment to begin with). In any case, we have four other guys that will likely cost is in the future, three if which coming soon (Hayward, Favors and Kanter). With the way salaries will be distributed it will necessitate a lot of foresight to project how you'll want to structure and enable a contending team years in advance. Which one of those three do we want to drop in the future to secure Mayo now?

I think the direction for this franchise should be painfully clear at this point: next year is a learning year strictly for development and secondarily for landing something in this hyped draft. After the season is over, the rebuild is done. We go into balls-to-the-wall win mode. This is where we'll make decisions on extensions and fill out the rest of our cap with complementary players and look to make a run over our ~4-5 year window.

I have mixed emotions. I certainly don't want to overpay for Mayo but I think he is a solid player and a player who can create his own shot. He isn't as selfish as people are saying. I do find it funny how people are going crazy about Mayo when many people were high on Bazz. Mayo is a way better player than Foye.

So if it means that Foye is gone and that Burks gets backup minutes at the PG and SG then I am ok with it at the right price. I really doubt we have anything to worry about because I think he wants to get paid and wants to be on a playoff/championship contending team.
