Jazz need shooters desperately

Also in China there are few players with Utah ties. Leading scorer is Pierre Jackson who at one time belonged to the Jazz. Leading rebounder is Hamilton who went to Lone Peak High and Iowa State. Then there is Jimmer. Big Al just got waived by his team. In Australia leading rebounder and shot blocker is Andrew Bogut. Melo Trimble is the leading scorer and assist guy (no Utah ties) but Bryce Cotton is 2nd leading scorer.

Rubio is now up to 34% on 4.4 attempts per game.

Last year he was 35% on 3.5 per game.

Rubio's shooting last year might not have been a fluke!

It was not his full year that was fluky... it was the second half... we’d hoped that is where he’d be.

The issue this year is finishing at the rim. He’s regressed... that combo of bad shooting outside and not finishing inside neuters our pick and roll.

So we want him off ball more... but they sag and he doesn’t make it enough to really punish the opposing defenses. It’s like we are taking a wrench and using it as a hammer... like it works sometimes but we’d be better off with a hammer.

So last night, Rubio was 3/7 on 3s and 1/8 on other attempts, for a total of 4/15. It's true his 3-pt shooting is up 1.6% this year (.342) so far compared to his career average of .326. That might regress, or it might represent real progress. His overall FG% is .373, which is 1.1% below his career average. That's going to be in the bottom quintile for PGs who get significant minutes.

If your point guard is going to be a streaky or non-shooter, that can work if everyone else on the floor shoots well. Rondo got away with it when he was playing with KG, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce. Problem is, Crowder is also streaky. Favors is really a non-shooter. Gobert is only a rim finisher. There's no KG, Ray Allen or Paul Pierce up in here.

If Rubio is going to be a pure passer/orchestrator at the 1, then everyone else has to complete plays, or it's not going to work.

My problem with Jerebko is that his defense is so bad, he was unplayable in the playoffs last year. Literally unplayable. I remember one game Quin put him in out of desperation, and OKC proceeded to burn him 3 times in a row, at which point QS took him out. I do agree that he gives you better minutes in the regular season than Niang does. But I bet had we picked Jerebko instead of Niang, people would be complaining about FO not taking chances, and bringing up "diamond in the rough" players like Ingles, that the Jazz took a chance on in the past.

About Allen, I'm very unimpressed with him. But looking at mock drafts for that range, they're all over the place. There were no low-bust-potential players left on the board. Allen might still end up a rotational player in the NBA. He's got okay size and athleticism and he can shoot.

But really, I'm more interested in going after a scorer NOW. We've seen what we've got. DL should be on the phone with every team looking for trades.
Being unplayable in the playoffs is pretty far from being unplayable during garbage time against a Mavericks team that probably won't make the playoffs.

I mean let's do some math here. Since last season we've lost Hood, Jerebko and Iso Joe(when he was still a playable NBA player before decline, of course), and who do we replace those guys with?

Just Crowder really, thanks to the incompetence of Allen and Niang(and possibly Thabo, unfortunately). Crowder can't carry the numbers left by three guys all by himself, and that was exactly what Quin was trying to make him do last game against the Kings(37+ min)

Exum was injured all year. So he replaced Hood, I suppose. However, I do agree with you. We obviously don't have enough scoring right now, and we're not looking very good. And a lot of that is because DL did nothing in the offseason. Which is something we generally supported at the time. Hindsight is 20/20.

Hood is a NBA caliber scorer who can give you 10+ pts a game every night. Exum can't replace that. And let's not forget what ISO Joe bring us during the 2017 season. Yet DL tried to replace those productions with Royce Oneale and Exum. He can't do math I can tell you that.

DL did set the bar for overpriced contract though. I mean, he even managed to overpay Neto, the team mascot, at 2mil a year while actual NBA caliber players Vonleh, Napier, Stauskas are all making less than that.

While I somewhat agree with your rant on spending I think you Niang hate is misplaced. His per 36 numbers are basically exactly what Jae’s are... except he’s got a higher TS%. Their defensive rating are identical as well.

So while he looks slow and doesn’t have Jaes muscles he’s been similarly effective. He’s usually in the right spot and is a good team defender... not bad for a minimum guy... give him a shot.
Because Jae is not that good and he's only getting this much minutes because other players on this squad are even worse. But hey, lets give them a shot. Who knows? Maybe one day they can bring us home a 60 pt loss against some other garbage team in garbage time.
