Jazz notify Wesley Matthews they will NOT match

Blazers will regret this deal if they can't use Wes and a package to get Paul. We are paying a proven guy over a span of many years 3 years and 10 million. They are paying a guy who could be good but likely won't get much of a chance with them 5 years and 34 million. Eat it Blazers.
 
It will be fun to see Raja vs. Wes and Jefferson vs. Boozer next season.

I'm optimistic that the Jazz players will fare well in those contests.
 
The biggest loser in all this could be Matthews. He was doing so well with the Jazz and a guaranteed starter to play big minutes. The sky was the limit. Now he has to sit on the bench behind Roy, like Rudy did, and you can see how disgruntled Rudy is. In fact, Rudy wants to be traded. Sorry for Wesley. Another big challenge to overcome.

I wouldn't go that far. He is guaranteed 34 million dollars over the next 5 years. Even with taxes that will leave him with what? 21 million dollars? Glad you got paid Wes, even happier it wasn't with us for that price.

If Wes is truly a starter in the league, this move does nothing. If he needs the right team to be a a starter, he's not a starter.

It almost reminds me of Shandon Anderson. He was huge for us and he ran for money and was never the same player.

Maybe Portland will stop trying to do this with our players every season. Then again, probably not. I will say that if they can't package Matthews at some point to get CP3 then they will really regret this move.

I don't think they can package Wes for CP3 this summer. So if they have designs on CP3, Wes was signed to fill voids for all the guys going out. SOMEBODY is definitely getting traded over there. As to the Blazers next year, the Oregon papers seem to think they can play Wes and Roy side by side as interchangeable 2's and 3's. Good luck with that.

Exactly. The Jazz for once seem to be making moves with their head and not with their heart.
 
Whats funny is that he would have been better off signing a 2-3 year deal at 5 mill per with the Jazz and his value as a starter would have given hime a far better deal in the future if he produced.
 
I'm going to profess my love for Wesley in this thread as well. I am not pleased with his departure, but then again, the cost was too much to justify his presence. The best of luck to you Wes, you were an integral part of our run last year and I am confident you will become a damn good player in the league. With that said, **** off Wesley Matthews.

Too risky with a new CBA on the horizon or lockout for that matter. Get in and get your money now.

No he wouldn't've. He will never get a contract better than this. If he produces he'll get the same maybe.

Matthews, undrafted out of Marquette, was in a position for a big payday after he averaged 9.4 points as a rookie and then became a restricted free agent. Matthews said that, had the Jazz made a "fair'' offer even if it was for less than the mid-level exception, he might have immediately re-signed with Utah before testing the market. He believed the Jazz were surprised he was able to land such a hefty offer sheet.

While Matthews is excited about going to Portland, he wished Utah and its fans the best.

"They really embraced me there,'' Matthews said. "I wish them luck except when they play us. But (the Jazz) never made me an offer.''
