Most overpaid contract of the entire offseason? Good work, Wesley. Good luck in Portland except when playing the Jazz. I'll root for you always, otherwise.
No such thing as overpaid. It's market value.

So when ARod received 10 years, 250+M from the Rangers, and no one else was in the same ballpark, it's simply market-value? No.
The market is set after the offer is accepted. Therefore, the teams dictate the market, not the players. Sure a player can demand x years and dollars but until some teams ponies up, the market's not set.
It only takes one party to dictate market value.
So A-Rod's market value was what the Rangers set it at? For them sure, league-wide, not necessarily. But I guess you're right and teams never overpay.
Break it down to a more personal level. Put something on ebay for sale. It only takes one bidder to set market value.
Correct. And perhaps I'm diverging from the traditional definition of market value. However, for me, just because one team, or person in your example, chooses to pay much higher than anyone else would have for a "product" does not mean that is the actual value of that product on a larger scale.
Of course it does. Bro. It's like a Basquiat painting. Just because one person can afford to pay the price it goes for, does not mean, it's worth less then it went for.
So you'd pay 100K for a regular ol' Honda Civic?
I wouldn't. No.
What if someone did? Would that set the market value of Civics at 100k a pop?
No they would not have let it go. The Jazz said Matthews was priority number one, so if the Jazz offered 4 mil/yr Portland woulda just upped the offer with the first year poison pill bonus - probably the same 33M/5 years offer. You said yourself Portland just wanted to screw the Jazz.I think it's clear that Portland was bluffing. If we made a reasonable offer in 4 mill / yr range to begin with, then Portland may not have made any offer and just let it go because they might've figured the Jazz had set their ceiling and they didn't really want or need Matthews, they just wanted to screw the Jazz.
Wrong. Matthews makes a lot more than 20M/4 years. Jazz get a more proven player in Bell. Bell is a great 3 pt shooter (jazz need), he's a top defensive player (nba need what with all the SG superstars), and he brings veteran, take no-****-from-nobody attitude (Jazz need). Some are worried about his age but he's had a lot of time off the past two years what his his wrist surgery (non shooting hand). He didn't log many minutes his first two season in Philly. For the next 3 years I'm confident he's going to be a stud for the Jazz.In not making an offer, everyone gets screwed: Matthews, the Jazz, and Portland. Making an offer was the one option to prevent this.
Good points. WE also had 3 starters at two positions (AK, CJ and Matthews). Now we have two defined starters and a guy knowing he's coming in as a sub or emergency starter.Blazers will regret this deal if they can't use Wes and a package to get Paul. We are paying a proven guy over a span of many years 3 years and 10 million. They are paying a guy who could be good but likely won't get much of a chance with them 5 years and 34 million. Eat it Blazers.
It would set the market value of that particular Civic...yes. Who knows, maybe that specific Civic belonged to Al Gore or Ke$ha.
You obviously mistake market value to market price.
Market value is a concept distinct from market price, which is “the price at which one can transact”, while market value is “the true underlying value” according to theoretical standards.
