Jazz notify Wesley Matthews they will NOT match

I think Raja said in his interview that his physical is Monday. That might explain things--assuming he passes the physical on Monday, the Jazz won't match. But the physical is perhaps scheduled for Monday in order to stretch out the Blazers as long as possible before giving them that definitive answer. That's why it's not official yet.

He'll pass. Over the next 3 years Bell will be better than Matthews will be.
But since Matthews will be riding the pine in Portland he'll be saving his legs for when his contracts up in 5. :)

What a difference a year makes.
Last year Paul Millsap was resigned for 4 yrs $32 million.
This year Luis Scola gets 5 years $47 million. (who would your rather have?)
And now Wes Matthews gets 5 yrs $34 million.

...that's why the owners are going to lock out the players! They have to protect themselves...from themselves!!!

I'd be shocked if Matthews finishes two years in Portland; let alone 5.

I'm glad Wes got paid; but while I hate to say it he'll probably end up like Quinten Richardson - shipped around from team to team as trade filler because he has a contract nobody wants.

Wesley seems to have destiny following him ... I wouldn't be surprised that Roy gets injured (he was injured last year, not sure if there is any long term effect), and he ends up getting big minutes.

Actually that is a very close call. Numbers very similar and Scola is of course bigger than Millsap. Last year almost no teams had much room under the cap. Only team I can think of was Detroit and they decided to split their money. New Jersey has to feel the worse. Completely struck out.

According to Randy R, speaking on KFAN today, the Jazz have still not decided they will not match. Sounds likely but not a done deal.
Yea, why not. Although it really doesn't matter. What would matter is if we were GOING TO match. Then you'd want to give a few extra days for the best of the rest to find other teams (Raja, Brown, etc.) so Portland would be left with fewer opportunities. Most likely, Portland is already out there shopping some of their other guards to make room for Wesley.

I seriously doubt Bell will be better than Matthews the next three years -- maybe this year, but after that, unlikely.

Wow. I don't know if Rigby is serious about still possibly matching, but WM would only add to a deep wing rotation that has a little bit of everything: shooting, treys, ruggedness, and defense.

If they match, that probably means they plan to trade Memo or AK before the deadline. Don't think Miller wants to go that far into LT. But stranger things have happened.

It's just more fun to lead Portland on as to whether we match or not.
I definitely could see us trading Kirilenko, but Memo seems unlikely with that injury. OTOH, the Jazz Brass may be willing to eat more luxury tax this year knowing AK is off the books next year. If Hayward develops as quickly as they think and we come up with a cheap backup PF, we wouldn't miss AK all that much. Evans could turn into the same defensive maniac AK was early in his career.
I have to agree; I love the Raja Bell signing, but despite taking great care of his body, at 34 this year it'll be challenging to stay healthy for more than a season. I still think keeping Matthews would be a good long-term idea, as I see him continuing to develop.
