Jazz Playoff Watch

I'd almost rather have the pick than the 8th and 7th seed, but on that note I never object to watching playoff basketball when the Jazz are involved.

If we are going to play like we have the last 3 games, then I want the pick. I thought the Jazz where going to push for a mid-seed and actually be competitive. Oh well, back to reality. Can't wait for Kendall Marshall so we don't (hopefully) have to see Watson.

Actually it's the players turn to make a word on this. I mean:
- or they start to tank and send a message that Ty is not the man
- or they start to win or play hard despite his "mistakes"
- or the worse, they don't care a continue to be a .500 team

Get the pick. We have some definite needs that this draft can provide.

Yup. No need to rush this rebuild project. Do it the right way. Get all the pieces we need, THEN worry about the playoffs. This draft could solidify every position for us, as far as the future is concerned, especially if we get two picks.

I wish the Jazz would have decided a month or so ago to forego the playoffs and tank. Now we're probably going to finish 9th or 10th in the west and get the worst-possible lotto pick. Oh joy!

Still should be able to get a good rotation player out of it. By the way the newest Jazz fan born yesterday says Go Jazz!

Careful with these sort of comments. The anti-tank crowd (you know, the guys who want us to lose a lot more in the future) will start calling you a bunch of mean names like loser. It doesn't matter that you don't actually want them to lose on purpose. Just pointing out that you might prefer keeping our worthless pick makes you a loser.

Ah, Jazz have an easier schedule than Denver and Houston. Utah could still make it as the 8th seed. Isn't that what we want...playoff experience for the young guys?

Seriously, it is ESSENTIAL the Jazz do NOT make the playoffs, IMO. If they don't, KOC will have to make changes. If they get to the playoffs, even as an 8th seed, he and Greg can continue to trim expenses and claim the young team just needs a few seasons to grow together.

could
but corbin wont allow it

I ask myself these questions.

Will the Jazz be contenders in the next couple years with the current roster and a year or two more experience? I say, no, because we still need a facilitator and/or become a perimeter threat.

Will we be able to get our needs through trades/FA without giving up too much? I say no.

Therefore, I'd rather have the pick and hopefully add one more piece to the build project/future contender.

It will be interesting to see if the Jazz will extend Hayward/Burks/Favors and Kanter down the road, and how much it will cost to do that. They may get into a position where they can't afford to keep the players they want to.

That said, I'd be happy to get two lottery picks in this draft. I feel like we could get two really strong players, and the lottery class this year is promising, I just hope we can afford (and G. Miller will pay) to keep players down the road...

do you guys really want to add TWO rookies to this already-young-as-hell team? especially if it comes at the cost of creating a culture where it's ok to lose? the jazz should absolutely make every effort to get to the playoffs, even if the end result is an embarrassing sweep. look at the playoff history of a team like OKC and you'll see that a team has to get a decent playoff résumé before they can advance deep in the playoffs.

put another way, you have to lose before you can win... and if we want guys like derrick favors, gordon hayward and alec burks to be leading the jazz to the playoffs in 2013 and beyond, it behooves us for them to get there and feel the difference in intensity. you can't just tank your way to a couple of late lottery picks and then all the sudden compete for a title. at some point you have to start showing your young core what it takes to be good, even if that process is slow and includes a couple of first-round beatings.

Hey....YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME! HELLO???

....unless, of course, you throw the ball all over the place, take poor percentage shots, don't play defense, miss wide open shots....and spend most of your practice time dunking the ball!

Ah, there is atleast one more person on this board who feels this way.

Looks like a lot of folks here want the Jazz to have 6-8 guys on rookie contracts, competing with each other for mins, while the Jazz struggle to finish games and lose. And then, when their rookie contracts are up, we promptly lose atleast 3-4 players.

Jazz have their task cut out on the trade and FA signings front if they want to contend in 2-3 years

I think it entirely depends on the scenario. I would take the NBA playoffs over, say, a low lotto pick that probably amounts to a good role player, but not anything substantially better than what we can get through free agency or what we already have. Sure, there are exceptions to the rule, but if we're drafting at 14 come this summer, and we don't own the GS pick, I'll be disappointed and would certainly want a playoff berth, even if it amounts to a sweep, over what we might end up with.

Of course, if the Jazz could realistically move up and get a top-five pick, then I think I might say tank and play for the pick. That's not going to happen now. They've won too many games to really position themselves for a chance at a really good lotto pick. So, I agree with you - win and move into the last playoff spot, if not a bit better. Yes, we probably would be swept by the Thunder, yes, it could get ugly, but I'd take playoff basketball over watching Utah get stuck with the 14th pick that probably won't amount to much of anything in the long run. I guess they could technically trade that pick for a missing piece, but I still think making the playoffs trumps that.

Unfortunately, with how inconsistent the Jazz are, I have a feeling we'll finish 9th in the west, 1 game out of the 8th spot because that seems to be our lot in life.

How in the condensed schedule did Houston get such a huge break? They played last night but now don't play again til Friday? Lame.
