What's new

Jazz Scrimmage: Oct 6th 4pm MST

I agree with fishonjazz. I thought Hayward, Kanter, and Murphy were the most impressive. I have been down on Kanter in the past because I felt like he just couldn't get off the ground. Tonight, I thought he looked great! I think the change in his body will make a big difference.

I was there and I would have to say Kanter was the most impressive player by far. He hit some j's then he out hustled and out muscled every one there. I'm excited for Foye he seems to be the JR Smith type with instant offense off the bench. Murphy can flat out shoot the ball. We do have some promise! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

One more thing. As far as conditioning: Big Al seemed to be pretty tired just from lay up drills and stretching (he didn't even participate in some of the drills).
Hayward played terrific but i did notice him getting pretty tired during the scrimmage, partly due to the fact that he was playing harder than alot of other guys and he has put on some muscle.
Kanters conditioning was great, and he never seemed to get tired.
Burks and favors seemed to not get tired but they were not playing as hard as some of the other guys.

And demare carroll was doing his typical stuff: playing good defense, diving into the crowd for loose balls, and hustling all while not really having any talent to play at this level.

Oh and jeremy evans can jump really high

Al had his back wrapped in ice by the end of the drills.

It's exciting to hear words like explosive tossed around with Kanter. He's such a good rebounder that any increase in leaping ability ought to make him a great garbage man as he continues to work on his shot. Hopefully, this makes Al or Millsap pretty expendable by the All-Star Break and we can really move forward as a team.

my scrimmage notes:

Hayward: Scored from multiple spots on the floor, sought out contact and had a couple dunks in traffic, shot >5 ft's (lost count), looked like the best player on either team; lost his man a couple times on defense (ma williams) due to lack of effort.
Favors: Long as all hell, seemed physically larger (height, wingspan, etc.) than everyone on the floor, changed every shot that was put against him, and had some nice deflections; a couple and-1 baskets but not very many offensive possessions (the attempts he did have were near the basket, and he is so long and strong he was almost unstoppable from that distance) ft attempts looked better than last season; also showed some major confidence (asked by locke "did you block any of lebron's shots in practice? "Thats what I do")
Burks: little to no shooting possessions in the first half, played quite a bit of pg, had multiple rebounds, and had some terrific passes including a 3/4 length pass over 3 defenders for an easy 2; once he finally started shooting he had an and-1, an athletic dunk, and a clutch go-ahead three. Was impressed with his handles.
Kanter: Huge, clumsy, but much quicker than last season (was outrunning every player on the floor at some points). Still had some over-aggression loose ball fouls, but those will diminish with time. showed a nice spin move off the dribble (resulted in a miss, but good to see), had a pretty shot from about 18ft out that was as smooth as a 2 guard; on defense penetrating dribblers would bounce off him like a wall and deter, nice to see; Had a BIG block to seal the win in the final seconds (and finished with a "Mutumbo finger wag" taunt)
Murphy: Got hot for a stretch, hit 3 or 4 long shots in a row, made some questionable (chuckerish) decisions late in the game, was impressed.
Williams: Very tall and long, had a nice alley oop and was cutting the basket nicely (this offense is going to make him produce from any role they assign him)
Tinsley: had many intricate passes, reads the floor well, pushes the ball nicely.
Evans: game remains the same, had a few dunks and dunk attempts, missed almost all of his ft's
Carol: hustle player, had a big block in the lane on a drive.
Jefferson, mo williams, paul: didnt play/didnt play much
ScrubsQuinn had some nice moves on occasion but scrubs were mainly scrubs.

Listened to the pod cast and both Locke and Boone seemed impressed with Darnell Jackson. Anyone there think he played well?

I can't decide if I think you're really drunk or just doing a nice imitation. Either way it's entertaining though.

Hayward was the most impressive player today. He was the top scorer (21 points, I believe), but did it in his usual, quiet way. He scored in every way: 3's, mid range jumpers, driving to the hoop for a slam, getting to the FT line. His passing was, as per usual, great. His ball handling seemed tighter to me, and he really seemed to drive at will. Very excited to see that. Overall, he just looked like someone who has figured it out.

Favors had some great 3 point plays early on (one from a drive on Millsap), but didn't do a ton in the 2nd half. Finished with 11 points.

Kanter looks great. The reports we heard over his improved confidence were not over-exaggerated. He seems to have the biggest personality on the team now. Basketball-wise, he ran the floor like none other, converting on 4 fast break dunks, and 2 FT's from being fouled in the fast break. He also drained a 17 footer, and did his up and under once. For those concerned over his ability to shove people around still, I wouldn't worry. He plowed over the fat, white guy in the post one time and dunked over him, even if he was called with a charge. Oh, and I felt his passing looked better. When he got the ball in the high post last year, he seemed very nervous about what to do with it. Today, he seemed aggressive about finding the right pass. Kanter impressed, no doubt. Finished with 14 points.

Burks played PG 90% of the time, and did alright with it. He really pushed the ball in transition and made pretty good passes. He didn't score till the second half (due to playing PG), but really exploded at the end there. Had a 3 points play, corner 3, and a NASTY dunk at the end. Scored the winning team's final 5 points. Finished with 8.

Foye looked good. Made one 3, and always seemed to get to the hoop for a layup when there was an opening. Finished with like 13.

Marvin had some great dunks in the first few minutes, but didn't play a ton after. Not much else to say.

Murphy was a nice surprise. The dude looks like he can really shoot. Drained three after three, and actually made some good passes. Although, like others have said, chucked a little too much down the stretch. Finished with 15.

This is going to be a fun season.
