Jazz select Cody Williams at pick 10

I was thinking about this today and I would agree. Although I think Brice is up there.
I just dont know how you can see him as a serious rotation piece if he cant defend. I watched very little this last season, but I didnt hear or see anyone saying dude had all of a sudden become even a passable defender in the G League or late season.

How quickly do you guys think Cody will play? I’ve been pretty vocal about my concerns with him, but I think trial by fire will be the best choice for development. If it were up to me, I’d start Kessler/Lauri/Hendricks/Williams/Sexton. But we know that won’t happen.

I wonder where he starts the season relative to Hendricks and Sens.
It's hard to say with Hardy. He played Key and Walker immediately but Taylor couldn't find minutes until Tech was moved. Hopefully the front office has learned their lesson and just clears the deck chairs immediately for him to find minutes. That means no Dunn or Clarkson.

Important to remember that Brice has played vanishingly few legitimate NBA minutes. Every post-ASB minute was to some meaningful degree garbage time.

Yeah, so all we can do is go back to his college film then right? Dude was lost constantly.

I wouldn’t say there is nothing to learn from his NBA minutes, I just would take any assessments with more than one grain of salt.

His offensive upside is through the roof. I know it doesn’t make sense now but he can be a legit scorer in the league.

Yeah, it’s hard to know especially bc we don’t know the intentions/goal of next season. Hendricks has a much easier role to contribute right away but I think Hardy was giving Key extra runway because he believed in his talent so much. It’s way harder to contribute as a primary ball handler than it is a spot up shooter as a rookie.

If Hardy really believes in Cody I think he will give him PT even if he’s getting crushed.

i think he'll have a somewhat limited rookie season but as he fills out which WILL happen dude's gonna be a beast. I think he'll be our next all star in 5-6 years but be really good in 2-3 years

Exactly. We can afford to be patient with projects. Dude has the skills, he just needs grow out a bit. I'm good with that.

Wow, I was expecting way way more excitement for this pick. Now granted I'm biased because Cody was my pick since shortly after the regular season ended.

But after the horrible lotto luck for the Jazz I gave up hope that he'd be available and stopped paying close attention to the draft prospects.

Why I thought there'd be more excitement:
He's one of the youngest players in the draft.
He was the 4th rated recruite last summer.
He's a true lengthy wing, at 6'7 - 6'8" with a 7'1" wingspan.
Fans have been wishing for a wing for several years, traditionally it's been something the Jazz haven't had many of.
He shoots efficiently, even if at a low volume.

Things I liked:
Strong family background, not just that they're a basketball family and his older brother appears to be really good. But he comes from a military background, he seems to be a mature kid that should have a very strong work ethic that I hope being the younger brother will only amplify that dive of having to work harder to try and keep up with him.

I don't agree with those who have said he's poor defensively, I hope he can be a good two way wing but I don't worry that he'll be atleast average defensively. Yes he needs to gain weight/strength no doubt but he has the length, quickness and I think footwork and desire to play defense.

This wasn't a strong draft, every player has worts but to me if weight is the biggest wort, I'll take that in a heartbeat. His next biggest concern was assertiveness, to consistently make his presence felt. Well I would say, yes he needs to but that he was playing with 3 seniors who 2 of them also got drafted, so he was filing his role after also coming back from injury.

One of the red flags on paper for Cody Williams is his extremely low 3Pr…..but just watching how Colorado plays and uses him….I would say that it’s definitely a product of the system/his role than being a poor shooter.

This doesn’t mean he’s automatically a great shooter, but I wouldn’t see it as a red flag in the same was as someone like Castle.

Another wart was how passive he was even before the injuries.

Yup, and passive in all parts of the game. He was playing on an experienced team with a lot of good players. I can forgive him for not being super aggressive on offense, but he is passive in all parts of the game. Doesn't rebound or use his length to make plays. Low activity player.
