JAZZ vs. Bobcats - Orlando Pro Summer League - 1pm et 7/5/10

I saw Rod Benson only played 5 minutes. Did he suck or are they saving him for camp and don't want anyone else to know about him?

Seriously - I shouldn't be so hard on him. He looked almost as good as Lance Stephenson is looking.

I think it's safe to say Lance Stephenson at 40 was a good pick. Not that I think he will carry this over into the NBA or anything, but guy has dominated the summers for as long as he has been playing ball. I don't know why anybody wouldn't think he would do this.

On another note, Orton looked like a guy that averaged 3 and 3 as a Freshman today. He was awful.

Summer league numbers matter very little, Gaines really needs to realize that. I mean, Matthews made the team last year with very average summer league numbers, and look at where he is at now. I think attitude is the biggest thing our FO is looking for in SL, which means Yada is gone.

He is an obvious project. Honestly, he should of stayed in College, he would of been a top ten pick by his junior year.

L-o-n-g thread, so I haven't read all of it. Anyway, James Augustine came to Illinois the same year (2002) as Deron Williams. He was a 2nd round pick of the Magic. Yeah, he might find a spot on our roster if we don't bring Boozer back.

Hayward played good. Did a good job at letting the game come to him and not force anything. Gains should be looking to pass the ball. If it was D-Will Hayward would have had at least 3 more buckets on his good cuts. Evans was really bad. got pushed around like crazy under the basket and lost 4 rebounds that can remember by not being able to hold a box out.

Basically the game can be summed up like this. Gaines sucked, Hayward looked promising and Augustine was beast. The Bobcats had some silky smooth players too.

Man you would think the Thunder would be better with the line up they put out on the floor. 4 of there starters played major minutes last year. But they can't get anything going against the Celtics.

Jaycee Carroll is eating them alive.

Huh? Gaines has a good attitude. He's a hustler and a decent defender, and he has shown that he can make a clutch shot.

Just because he doesn't pass the ball or run the offense or even shoot well doesn't mean he can't be a backup. Heck, it worked for Ronnie Price for years . . . .

I say bring Gaines back unless you find someone better. I thought that he was about as good as Price anyway. But the coaches might want to insist that he practices running the defense during the summer league.

I watched maynor run the pick & roll for OKC. He's got the timing and the spacing down, he can beat his man off the dribble and make the pass. What a find at the #20 pick in the draft. Good job KOC. $%#@!#$$@!@##@!

I thought Hayward had a great first game in Summer League. I'm excited to see the rest of the games this week.

Also, what is up with OKC? Do they not realize what Summer League is for?

Hayward looks almost afraid to shoot the ball. Had a open look and put it on the ground, passed it on a 2 on 1 FB. I really wanted to see if this guy can be a player for us and 1 for 1 from the field is not showing me much

With all due respect, "being a player" has to do with a lot more than just scoring. Hayward will get his shots in the Jazz system just like all of our wings do.

Here's what I learned today....(not necessarily anything I didn't already know)

Gaines is terrible.

Hayward doesn't suck - he looks like a late first round pick who can play a little. Just not the guy I was hoping for when we knew the Jazz would get a high pick from the Knicks for the last 5 years. He's at least the 4th best player on the summer league team.
You can tell that from 1 summer league game where Hayward was barely involved in the offense and not getting passed to? He looked like the best player on the floor when he started playing instead of thinking out there.

First rule of summer league: if you are a guard and have the ball in your hands all game you will look a lot better than everyone else on the floor. Summer league does not equal NBA basketball.
