JAZZ vs. Bobcats - Orlando Pro Summer League - 1pm et 7/5/10

Koufos rebounds a missed shot, then can't convert. The clumsiness continues.

Hayward hustles to save the offensive possession, dishes to Augustine for an easy dunk at about 1:30.

On the next possession, Hayward leaps for a rebound.

Augustine with a hustle OREB after the second of two misses by Gains :(.

On the next possession, Hayward takes ball in for an unassuming dunk. Jazz down 85-81 after an 8-0 run with 53 seconds left.

Then Utah prevents the inbound and causes a turnover. Augustine scores. Again.

Sadly, Hayward gave up the opportunity for a game-winning shot.

(Layden should've called a time out to instruct the team. The in-game strategy continues to suck. There was time for a TO.)

NBA.com commentator Eric Kamla drools.

-Hayward with a couple of nice plays and passes in the last 2 minutes of the 4th. Woulda liked to seen him look for the shot in the last couple seconds though, Gaines was wide open but had to rush it.
-Gaines reminds me of a young Derek Fisher. Maybe like a homeless man's '97 Derek Fisher. Shoot-first physical PG, even used the Fisher "drive down the lane and hurl your body into the defender" move. Pesky defender. But ouch, please make a free throw!?
-Also I like how the players line-up in such orderly fashion and have a handshake line. Reminds me of youth soccer.

Here's what I learned today....(not necessarily anything I didn't already know)

Gaines is terrible.

Hayward doesn't suck - he looks like a late first round pick who can play a little. Just not the guy I was hoping for when we knew the Jazz would get a high pick from the Knicks for the last 5 years. He's at least the 4th best player on the summer league team.

I wish Hayward would have taken that last shot 2. But that was a great pass to a wide open shooter. Great comeback to make it exciting at the end.

I was impressed with Hayward. he didn't take many shots but he did a lot of the the little things. The guy can pass though. If he had better players around him he would have had a lot more assists.

You are being too harsh in both respects. Gaines was a great hustler, provided double-digit scoring, and an OK A/TO ratio. I wish that Layden had told Gaines to run the offense more. (In other words, not enough in-game strategy.)

Hayward had a solid, smart game. Got involved in a lot of plays. Didn't seem to get beaten much, although he was shy about shooting sometimes and probably let Gerald Henderson and other wings get a few more points than would be ideal. Got the post-game feature interview.

On a separate note, one stat that speaks volumes for me is that every starter except Koufos got a blocked shot.
