Kyle Filipowski's Road to Being a 7' Playmaker

I feel like Flip is still in his own head about NBA speed and length. He doesn't have elite physical tools so he will have to learn to use his good physical tools with high bb iq. The first summer league game SLC he was complete lost. But each game I see him figuring out a little more what he can and can't do at this level. Hopefully he can make good strides in the next few summer league games. But for this season I expect him to be in the G league most of not all of the year.

Whenever he has made a good play he comes down and makes another. Just a splash of confidence makes him way better.

He might be in the G for a bit, but it won't be long. The Jazz aren't trying to win

The thing I'm most surprised with is... he actually moves his feet well on defense. His defense is not polished or anything, but there are things for a coaching staff to work with. The offensive flashes was the whole reason he was considered a high level prospect at one point. But yeah... I'm intrigued. No guarantee he will pan out, but he has ball skills, he has some passing chops... can he shoot it? Can he finish?
Not exaggerating but I think he moves his feet better than Sensabaugh

Flip had so far shown that he’s:

- not very athletic
- not all that tough physically
- slow on defense (basically a traffic cone at times)
- not big enough to guard 5s and not quick enough to guard 4s
- doesn’t hustle on defense
- doesn’t have a consistent 3 point shot (yet)

To me there are lots of concerns there, things he needs to work on physically and mentally.

But all Cy could say is “ohhhhhh… but he can passssss”

Gee dude, we get you’re a contrarian, but maybe take look at the whole picture once in a while?
Looked pretty athletic to me today

Lauri is much more explosive vertically and laterally. But they are both tall and white!
And fluid and can handle for their size.

Lauri can really "access" his athleticism much more consistently than Filipowski. Flip's athleticism seems kind of situation dependent, like he needs the right conditions to make the plays that look impressive vs Lauri who can summon it quickly in tight spaces.

But Flip has been way underrated as an athlete by some. He doesnt really need to add size, but he needs to get stronger. I think he could have a mini-athleticism/strength jump in him like he had his freshman to sophomore year at Duke.

Whoever of you called KO similarities for his possible future, seems quite right, he might be coming something like that in offense, but hopefully better defense - Jazz is great organisation so I'd bet on that honestly. He has that "extremely coachable and willing learner" aura for me.

Then there's also this:
"Obviously, just how skillful he is, how mobile and well he moves at that height, he is somebody I definitely try to model my game after," Filipowski said of Markkanen.8 Jul 2024

Maybe Lauri could invite him to train with the same trainer in Finland that helped to push Lauri for his All Star form. They could be sparring each other as well. Kyle or Lauri, pick up the phone!

Stylistically, I think Hardy wants a big like Flip. He doesn't want to run high PnR, he wants a playmaker in the middle of the floor doing dribble hand offs and finding cutters. But all 3 centers on rosters are roll/cut bigs, somethings got to give at some point. I think he can play with Collins, but probably won't do well (offensively) with Kessler or Eubanks.

The thing that I'm most excited about Flip, is that he's just a baller. He goes from taking it to Wemby on offense to taking on Luka on defense. He's got some crazy moxie.

Because Flip is skilled and white people think he is going to be soft, but he is not afraid of contact. He's been surprisingly good at finishing through contact as well.
