9.2M the first year? So they are gonna go into the luxury tax to sign Mattews?
Signing bonuses don't affect the cap. It would be a 5.76 M cap hit. Same as a MLE without a bonus.

Blazers going after Matthews makes no sense. They traded for Babbitt. Then they took two more guards in this draft and already signed one of them. Why are they going after Matthews?
I don't think they'll match the offer, and I really wanted Matthews to stay. This is the worst off-season in quite a few years for Utah, imo. I'm pretty bummed.
You're right. Portland doesn't need Wes playing behind Roy. But the way the Jazz played it, a guy like Paul Allen, with his deep pockets, had the funds to make it really hard for the Jazz.
It's how you play poker - and the Jazz suck at it. Just like with Millsap Jazz showed their hand: "we love this player and we're definitely going to match any offer." So of course someone else at the table - who has a bigger stack than you - can afford to stick it to you and make you either lose the hand or make you overpay for it. For all their "no comment"s the Jazz FO suck at hiding their hand. They sit on their hands and slowly bleed their stack away until they start to tilt, and lose even more money overpaying for a hand (Memo, AK).
What would be sweet is if the Jazz were not really in love with Matthews at all - but played it up that they were in order to get someone like Portland to try to stick it to them, and then the Jazz sit back and let Portland keep the overpaid player. FOOLED YOU!!! That's how you're supposed to play. But the FO is clueless.
How to play this now? Memo to Jazz: KNOW WHEN TO FOLD 'EM!!!

This kind of situation reminds me a lot of Marquis Daniels. He had a big rookie year that was parlayed into a big contract, similar to what Wes is getting. I don't think Daniels hasn't been as productive since and certainly didn't prove to be worth that contract. I wanted Wes to stay, but he's gone (or at least he should be). Have fun rotting on the bench in Portland.
Just for the record:
- Memo ->9.450 mil
- Millsap -> 6.200 mil
- CJ -> 3.700 mil. next year.
I do agree. Millsap's contract was only bad the first year. Otherwise it's a steal. But like Wes, Millsap would have been a backup in Portland - so Portland had no reason to throw a toxic first year at him except the Jazz were so transparent in their love for Paul (Millsap). As has been said about Wes playing behind Roy, it made no sense for Portland to throw a big offer at Millsap playing behind Lemarcus. Portland's move with Millsap had more to do with playing the Jazz rather than playing the actual hand. I'm glad the Jazz matched on Millsap, but I don't think Portland would have offered Millsap that much - certainly not so heavy the first year - if they hadn't seen the Jazz gush their love of Millsap. So Jazz had to eat it that first year -- and that first year put the squeeze on Greg Miller and perhaps resulted in Jazz giving Maynor away for nothing.- Can you prove me that Millsap does not deserve that contract? He could easily be considered a talented, promising and reliable, multidimensional bigmen, IMO. Do you agree?
I don't remember - on sportsbeat or something. I shook my head when I heard it. I mean, for a guy who's says "no comment" more than any other GM, KOC really picks his spots to start blabbing -- only when he really really wants to resign a guy. I wonder if he's only thinking about being sure the player knows that the Jazz they really like him, and at the same time forgetting about other GM's / Owners out there like Portland that have proven themselves to be ******* sharks.- From where, or which of KOCs or any team management member's comments did you get te impression that the Jazz will do anything to keep Matthews, i.e, they are in love with WEs?
I hope they don't. I love Matthews, but not for that price. Bring back Brew.I, for one, do not think that Jazz FO will match that offer, at all. They are reported to find players who they can add by using the MLE, which Wes insisted on but KOC declined. I also do not want them to match that heavy contract.
