Game Thread May 26, 2021 08:00PM MT: Jazz vs. Grizzlies - Game 2

Added to Calendar: 05-26-21

Honestly we are playing a stupid strategy. We should be sagging off him and giving him open threes, playing ball denial when he is off ball, throw some zone at him.

It's fixable imo.

I’m not confident in us making any big adjustments. I mean, we knew this same thing last year and didn’t adjust. There was a game against Lillard that was nice, but other than that it’s been “hey, put Royce on the guard, he’s our defender, right?”

Well I will ask you point blank. So you think he plays more than 26 minutes next game or less?

I think more.
So he will probably take some of those minutes from Mike. Joe should too, I agree about that. 37 minutes is too many for Mike.
On the other hand it's the ****ing playoffs. What are we saving guys for. It's go time

Saving them for later in the playoffs.

If Mike or Donovan go down, this is for sure over. And I favor minutes-restriction to sitting dudes or injury.

But we'll see. I would hard-cap both at 32 MPG (save for a Jazz elimination game or OT).

I saw the Jazz make a successful and purposeful play adjustment with like 3 minutes left in the 4th where Bogey hedged hard and (I think it was) Mike dove under the screen. And it worked.

Whatever the case, guarding him like he's Curry is ****ing dog ****.

The “save some for later” was the moral Quin walked away with from Willy Wonka. I’m glad he didn’t use his challenge on the Gobert/Morant phantom foul because now we can use it later in the series.

Seriously, at least rub the ref’s noses in their **** by challenging that one.

I don’t disagree with Charles and Shaq that the Jazz need to tighten up on defense. I don’t disagree with their concerns of our overall toughness and style of play. I do find it laughable when they talk about our inability to stop them when a healthy Mitchell is just as dominant offensively as Morant. So while Morant may give us Murray 2.0, who’s going to be joker? Brooks? Kyle Anderson? JV? That might happen but I doubt it.

I think the Jazz need to focus on sagging off Morant and turning both he and Slo Mo into shooters. Meanwhile, keep attacking Jonas Kanter in the high screen and roll. Force them to bench his ***. Turn these games into scoring affairs and out gun these guys in games of 110+. My bet is they don’t have enough scoring to keep up.

As a defensive strategy the Jazz try to take away the other team’s 3’s. They’re playing money ball on both sides of the floor. They want to bait teams into the mid range and trust Rudy to go 1 on 5 in the paint, which he does remarkably well.

This strategy works pretty well against most teams in the league that are trying to win by shooting 3s, hence the Jazz having a top 5 defense. However, Memphis is not that team. They get to play to their strengths against the Jazz - their athletic guards penetrating and shooting close-in midrange floaters and jumpers.

If the Jazz stick to this strategy, which also gave up two 30+ point games to Morant in the regular reason, the series will come down to whether they Jazz can make enough 3s to offset all of the 2s the Grizzlies are going to get.

We might win this series, but our deep roster construction flaw is on display. Our perimeter defense was a sieve, with blow-by after blow-by. We make good guards look like gods and average guards look really good in the playoffs

I would bet strongly against us winning any series after this one at this point.

Bogey, Clarkson, or Ingles needs to be flipped for a high level perimeter defender this offseason. Period. There is no argument against this position that I will accept. Maybe even two of those three need to be flipped for two guys that can defend and score a little. The trade value of all three of those guys is as high as it will ever be, and they are all expendable, IMO.

Saving guys for later is too risky.
All these games are important. You try to get cute and save guys then you might go out in round 1 or even make the series a couple games longer than necessary.

Let's play our guys what it takes to win each game. Finish them off in 5 and then be able to rest waiting for the 2nd round.

I think they're probably more correct than Jazz fans want to admit. Tonight, Memphis matched Utah's intensity and played pretty strong in the second half of a game Utah absolutely needed but Memphis didn't. That indicates to me we're maybe not the better team.

Sure, I could be wrong and things flip in Memphis but I'm assuming the Jazz will be dogs Saturday and if they lose that game, they'll be dogs again in game four, and right there makes them underdogs for the series.

To be honest, I'm more discouraged after tonight's win than I was Sunday's loss because I really expected the Jazz to come out and dominate and while they did in the second quarter, it didn't really carry over into the second half.

I'm actually leaning toward Utah losing in six, which is insane to me because I wouldn't have thought that even after game one.
Ok, Boomer.

Probably the most egregious failure to challenge a call all season. Mind-boggling to me how he just, nearly pathologically, refuses to challenge. And when he does he gives off a vibe that he's getting a rectal exam or something. I don't get it.

Agreed. And that's what they did in game 1 for some unknown reason. If that leads to our ouster someone needs to get fired.
