What's new

My best guess for Jazz offseason. (not that exciting)

Jazz trade
Cap space

Golden State trades
Andrew Biedrins
Richard Jefferson
2 future 1st rounders

Why for Utah: Utah turns cap space into a couple expiring players and a couple draft picks. Terribly expensive way to spend 19 million for 2 first rounders, but, Jazz need to spend the cash on someone no matter what.

Golden State: They save a butt ton of cash, allowing them room to retain Jack and Landry.

Free agency

Losses
------------
Al Jefferson
Paul Millsap
Mo Williams
Raja Bell
Earl Watson
Jamaal Tinsley

Retention
-------------
Randy Foye (3 years 9mil, team option on year #3) Jazz like what Foye brings to the floor and his character off the court. He'd be much better utilized off the bench.

Demarre Carroll (3 years 5 million, buyout on year #3) A nice role player off the bench, Jazz try to lock him up for a few years for peanuts)

Kevin Murphy - Jazz pick up team option (about 800k)

Signings
---------------
Jazz could use a veteran PG on a one year deal. Nobody of note is going to sign for one year, so looking at a guy who might be willing to take an unfavorable deal for a chance to start. Will Bynum comes to mind. (1 year 5 mil)

Draft
------------------

#14 - Dennis Schroeder - Jazz fans think he's teh next Rondo. Reminds me more of Jacque Vaughn. But, looks to be a solid prospect @ #14 to me.

#21 - Steven Adams - Got size and upside, also fills a need as backup C.

#46 - Kenny Kadjii (ok, no idea who will go here, Jazz have a way of drafting surprises in 2nd round.)

Roster
------------
PG - Will Bynum, Alec Burks, Dennis Schroeder (#14)
SG - Gordon Hayward, Randy Foye, Kevin Murphy
SF - Marvin Williams, Demarre Carroll, Richard Jefferson
PF - Enes Kanter, Jeremy Evans, Kenny Kadji (#46)
C - Derrick Favors, Andris Biedrins, Steven Adams (#21)

The idea here is to tank for a top pick in 2014 while developing youth and protecting cap room for next off-season while adding a couple future assets (the Golden State picks).

I don't like Biedrens and Jefferson. Not with Ty still around.

I also don't like Burks at the PG spot. He is an ok PG and a very, very promising SG. Play him at SG.

Also, I think the Jazz go into next season WAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY under the cap. I think they hope that there will be a team like Boston that will try to unload a player like Pierce that they can essentially get for free (ie, if Boston thinks they can get Howard to sign).

Nice post, OP. I think that's a reasonable draft projection, and not a bad draft.

I think the Jazz ought to try to sign-and-trade Al Jefferson to a team that wants him and needs our help to get him. That would be a good deal for Al and the Jazz. But I don't think teams are going to give up first round draft picks, especially in 2014 so easily.

As much as the Warriors would love to unload those guys, I don't think the Jazz would be in a hurry to take them, and I don't think the Ws would be in such a hurry to give up picks for them.

You may be right (although I doubt it's Paul Pierce) but, I don't really want to bring in a guy like Pierce anyway, I want to tank and tank hard. Guys like Beans and Jefferson are perfect for that, they get us to the minimum salary and don't add to the win column.

That would be ideal, but, judging by the Jazz success in moving Jefferson/Millsap the last couple years I'd say it's a long shot. Obviously preferrable, but, I didn't want to base my projection on what I consider long shots.

not bad on the draft portion just switch kadjii for Jackie Carmichael.

Bynum sucks but not to bad

Last year I wanted Jarret Jack. And I think I stand vindicated in that opinion. This year it looks like the best value at PG to me is gonna be Will Bynum. I've always thought he played well in limited minutes, might be a guy who could shine given the opportunity.

Why do you think he sucks?

My knowledge of Will Bynum is that he can't shoot and he can't pass, but is good otherwise.

Don't like Jameer, but I'd prefer that Orlando package that you started with.

When I made the Orlando deal I was under the false impression that Orlando was sitting at 75mil in salary and would probably like a salary dump to avoid paying huge dollars for a poor team. But, I was off by 20+ million. Orlando isn't in danger of hitting the luxury tax, nor do they seem especially keen on moving Nelson. It's really a non-starter.

I liked it better too. But, GS is much more realistic.

Why not this:

Jack - Schroeder - Tinsley
Hayward - Burks - Korver
Williams - Carroll - Korver
Kanter - Landry - Evans
Favors - Adams - Jaiteh

Quite realistic, could happen...

I've read several places that the Jazz aren't likely to keep Kevin Murphy. Is there a reason for that? Seems like they need to fill roster spots somewhere.

That team's gonna suck alright. I think we might even have a chance at a top #5 pick.

Alec seems like more of a proven PG than SG. He looked very lost at the end of the season playing SG and he can't spot up shoot yet. He is not very good playing without the ball. That is why at PG, he is better because he shoots better off the dribble and only knows how to be effective with the ball in his hans. One thing i like about Burks at PG is his length and rebounding.

Burks was great at spot up 3's this year. He shots 36% from deep this year, which is pretty good for a player not considered a shooter.

He is much better at SG. He, like Hayward, run better from the side of the court and off of action than they do in at the top of key off the dribble.

I really like Dennis Schoeder at 14, but given the weakness of this draft frankly at PG I can totally see him going in the top 10 before it is all said and done.

I actually like Anthony Bennetts game and think he would be the perfect 3/4 for this team.

I suggest that if he is around at 6, to propose a trade with Sacramento: #14,#21 and $3Million which is super valuable to them at this point.. I actually think they consider it. Then we buy one of the Atlanta picks or even Dallas who want to retain as much cap space as possible to go after Howard/CP3#.

Here is my scenario:

Package #14,#21 to get #6 and select Anthony Bennett, and then buy the Atlanta pick outright for $3M and pick up Dennis Schroeder hopefully if he slips to 17.

Then, take on the contract of Caron Butler for the rights to get Eric Bledsoe and sign him to a reasonable contract 4/$30M.

Bledsoe/Dennis Schroeder/Journeyman PG Earl Watson preferred
Burks/Foye
Hayward/Bennett/M Williams
Kanter/Bennett/Evans
Favors/Kanter/Journeyman Big

yeah but if you look at his spot up 3 point percentage, I think you'd find it to be pretty low. He was only knocking down off the dribble. He's terrible at catching in shooting.
I Agree with some of what you are saying, but i think burks plays bad without the ball. He needs the ball in his hands to be effective. His effectiveness went down when we started playing him off the ball.
