This is all true, but the one sure-fire way to land a potential superstar is to draft him and hold his rights during his developmental stage.

Remember, Paul George was a #10 pick, Hibbert was a #17 pick, Lance was a #40 pick. They developed those players well and made a very good signing in David West and traded for George Hill (they could have kept Kawaii Leonard also?). Goes to show what careful drafting and planning can do.


Granted this is not normal, but with a hard(er) cap coming it's also not impossible.

I don't like any system where the worst team can theoretically get the 7th pick - no matter how small the odds are of that happening.

You are saying this because you're assuming that the team with the team with the worst record needs a star player more than the team with the 7th worst. On average, the team with the 7th worst record in the league over the past 10 seasons has had 28 wins. That's pretty terrible.

Worse, however, is the fact that you have no idea of gauging how bad a team really is because there's tanking involved. The bottom 10 teams or so might have had very different records this season if the league had a different lottery system or had no draft at all.
