What's new

Neto is pretty neato.

The earlier you bring him over, the earlier he's a free agent. If he's going to get good coaching and decent playing time playing elsewhere, there's really no need to burn years leading up to restricted free agency (I'm assuming the Jazz will be smart and sign him to a deal that reaches at least 3 years with team options). Signing/trading for a vet 2nd/3rd PG with an expiring deal seems like the smarter move to me. I'd also like the Jazz to bring in another 4 (again, preferably a vet on a one year deal), as I think a reserve big rotation of Gobert/Evans/Marvin is going to be pretty ****ing ugly, especially with Favors' high foul rate.
A very good point. I could see the Jazz just bringing back Tinsley and waiting another year (or two) for Neto. Only problem is does he then even WANT to come over? He develops, gets another offer from his team and sees that, at best, he could only expect 15-18 mins behind Burke. Have to admit I'm waffling on this one. AS for the bigs, don't forget we also have Biedrins ;-) Agree it's going to be ugly at times. I'm COUNTING on that to improve our draft position!

We don't have a backup PG and we've already gone "All In" on the tank by having Biedrins and Jefferson as key subs. Have them play 2 quarters each, with the best man eventually getting more playing time (I think that will be Burke, but you never know). We're not locked into a certain salary with a 2nd rounder, right? IINM, Jazz gave CJ the equivalent of a 1st because they had promised him (and then traded the pick to move up). Give Neto the normal salary for his draft position, throw in a $1M bonus on top of that + his salary + the $500K we can contribute to his buyout. If I were Lindsey, I'd sign him to a guaranteed 3 yr deal. I think we've seen enough already to know he can be a very good backup.

Unfortunately, I do not believe CBA would allow for this 1 million dollar bonus. This is not the NFL.

20 minutes in a summer league game is "enough"?

Along with all the scouting and film they watched pre-draft. Jazz wouldn't have traded for him if they didn't think he had valuable skills. What's the WORST scenario? He turns into the offensive version of Ronnie Price? For what he will cost, I think the Jazz can afford to have Neto be their 3rd PG - even if he turns out to be a "bust." The only way we get him over here is with a guaranteed deal. He's not going to buy himself out of a contract in Spain without the assurance of getting paid by the Jazz.

BTW, anyone know what his salary was last season?

Badly stated on my part. I'm just saying if the customary salary for a player picked in the 40's is $700K, then offer him a 3-yr deal for $1M more than that (so $3.1M). Not sure how this compares to what he was making, Maybe have to go higher than that. Did the new CBA place restrictions on contracts for 2nd round picks?

The Jazz sure no how to find those second round steals. No wonder they were interested in a slew of them from Golden State.

1. The draft is a crap shoot. They obviously thought they saw something, but might think he needs some seasoning. Playing regular minutes in the ACB could provide that seasoning just as well as playing spot minutes on a **** NBA team.

2. The worst? He doesn't get minutes and/or hates playing for a bad team with no direction, goes back to Europe ASAP, and becomes a useful player the Jazz will never see again.

It sounds as if Neto's not coming over unless he's guaranteed rotation minutes. Is he ready to play 12+ minutes in the NBA every night? If he is, he'll hit free agency well before his prime, and most likely before the Jazz are ready to contend. The ACB is a good league, where he'll get minutes against solid competition while he develops physically and as a player. Having Burke learn from a vet PG who understands what it takes to succeed both on and off the court could be a better move than bringing Neto over now.

Agree in theory. However, this could become a Tomic situation where he's making more with his current team than what he would in the NBA. If Neto comes over now and develops into a Bledsoe-like player and teams really want to trade for him, that would be flipping a 2nd-round pick into 1st-round value. His salary demands are only going to increase the more he plays in the ACB.

I believe 3 years after you are drafted and have not come to the NBA the rookie salary structure is no longer in place (could be wrong though). Mirotic will probably be a good test of this.

It would suck if he plays in the ACB next season, does well, but then his agent tells him to stay over there for two more seasons so he could demand more money when he comes over. By that point in time our current roster will have already bonded and set the chemistry. I say we bring uim ober now and give him 15+ minutes a night. Let Burke feel the pressure to perform, so if he doesn't, then Neto can step in and assume leadership without a hiccup.

A 2 yr deal with team options on yr 3 and 4 is plenty of time to impress Neto and develop him. His dad is a Jazz fan, that's got to count for something --hard to imagine him bolting. With our new direction, he would only not get minutes if Burke was actually better. That's a win/ win. If Burke is better, but Neto is of starter quality as well, we have developed a great asset.

The Jazz have some money to throw at him, and he could be part of the future, so.... why not bring him over? We have room for him now, obviously. He can get 16 minutes or so.

His agent needs to realize that this IS the best time for him. We don't even have the rotation set yet. For all he knows, Neto could earn the starting minutes. When the hell else are we going to have the money, the roster spot, and the minutes up for the taker?

It has sounded obvious from both Rigby and Lindsey today that if Neto keeps playing well this summer league there's a high chance we bring him over

I agree with this. He was a 2nd round pick, and he's getting his NBA shot on a team with a spot open. The fact that the Jazz are having a down year this year makes it a better situation for him. Obviously, the Jazz are jumping through the hoop to have him join summer league. They're giving him some minutes. If Neto wants to be in the NBA, he should grab this opportunity.

Really good point. But there is one problem, he has 3 years left on a contract on which I can't find any buyout amount. I really tried to dig it up. But if it's really high and forcing him to contribute from his own pocket, it's going to be hard to get it done this summer and even less likely the next.
