Game Thread Oct 04, 2022 08:00PM MT: Jazz at Trail Blazers (Preseason)

Added to Calendar: 10-04-22

NAW stays. Gay Gone.
That's the hope anyway. Zeller should be gone as well as he just has a camp deal.

If I had to guess, it's Lee, Bolmaro and Gay that are goners. But if there is more to Dok's injury than we're aware of, he could be supplanted by Zeller as well. The fact that Zeller is getting so many minutes in these preseason contests seems pretty suspicious.

Bolmaro has 3 more years left on his rookie contract. Jazz aren't going to cut a guy they're committed to for 3 years.

I mean two of those are option years so he could be expiring. Why waste three years on the guy… though I’d rather eat him than FAT… I mean THT.

Well if it's a sunk cost fallacy kind of deal then we're certainly not going to get off of Rudy Gay who we're committed to for three years to the tune of 18 mil. We put him on waivers and nobody is going to bite until he clears waivers and then maybe offer him vet min. Concerning Bolmaro, it would only be about five million total for the next two as the rest is club option. If our owner was Elon Musk, Gay would be a goner for sure but I think that Ryan might be more of a million dollar pincher if the truth's known. So then my guess is Lee. Bolmaro and Dok which is a real crying shame.

My thoughts:

- Conley and Olynyk might be too good for the tank. The offense looks so much better with them in the game (although Olynyk is truly an awful defender).
- I don't love Vanderbilt as much as I thought I would. He's high energy, but not always super effective.
- Walker Kessler with a much much better game on the defensive end tonight. He was the only player we had that could do anything against Nurkic.
- Bolmaro with a good game. His shot doesn't look great, but went in to tonight.
- Fontecchio with a rough start to his NBA career.
- Agbaji needs more than 6 minutes.
- If THT loses us so many games that we land Wemby, then that trade will go down as the greatest trade in the history of the Jazz.

I’m back to being scared we’re going to win too many games this season. Not that preseason matters, but we resembled a team last night. I find myself in an odd conundrum where I want the Jazz to suck but I also love watching good basketball and young players grow. Where we would be if we had kept Gobert and shipped out Mitchell? Unselfish play, ball movement and defensive intensity, all the things I wish we had last year.

It would be nice to know how many deflections we had, wish that stat was on the box score. loved Johnson getting after it.

The tanking for Wemby is going to be epic. In the long run, being brutally bad is better for the franchise, the fans, the coach, and long term. If you’re worried about seats and fans being interested, just imagine how electrifying it would be to have a top 2 pick playing next year.

They have team deflections per game on NBA.com: (https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/hustle?dir=D&sort=DEFLECTIONS) Although it doesn't look like they track this for pre-season games.

I thought Portland looked bad more than we looked good. I do think we'll have good shooting games though, and that likely carries us to too many wins.

Agreed on the tanking for Wemby. If he keeps having games like last night there are going to be more teams joining the tank race, especially late in the season where there might be decisions made to bottom out vs try for a play in game.

Yup… as much as I hate watching THT we have to find 20 minutes a game for him to make the tank work.

KO and Mike add functionality to this group that will end up winning games we shouldn’t for a tanking team. Beasley, JC, Sexton are all guys that can get hot any given night.

You really have to try to be bad to tank… it’s sucks… it’s stupid… it’s necessary. I heard Pelton talking and he said something like 70% of teams that Vegas gives an over under of 25 or less go over. You have to get the young guys out there… you have to get good vet talent out. You really do need to worry about the standings… maybe last nights showcase sent Ainge and JZ straight.

We're going to need more Beverley for THT type trades to pull this stuff off. What teams could use Mike that could give us nothing but salary in return?

i'm disappointed in Hardy so far being unwilling to sit the veterans asses down and get the young guys a lot more run. this needs to happen in the regular season, but at the very least get them some solid minutes in the pre-season - that's easy.

Conley for Lonzo
I have a feeling the Bulls could potentially be a surprise team that tanks at the deadline. Ball would be a good target as they could sit him the entire season however Bulls have looked pretty bad since Lonzo's injury last season. Wouldn't be shocked if they ended up trading someone like Derozan and/or Vuc once the calendar hits 2023.

We need to do those deals but also maybe get something useful and make it expiring salary though… that’s the biggest WTF with the THT trade

Nah… they don’t own their own pick… it’s too 4 protected but a late tank ends with them at #9/10 and almost no shot at keeping the pick.

You are never getting Lonzo Ball for Mike Conley.

You have to attach a pick. It's non-negotiable.

He's acting like a first time coach trying to get meaningless preseason wins!

I do see the veteran coaches like Pop don't give a crap about preseason and play alot more of the rooks and fringe guys.
