Watching the OKC game, it's obvious you want dominant athletes. You want quickness, you want length, you want drive. If Gordon could shoot the damn ball, I'd be all over him as our pick. But since he can't, I'm into Exum, Vonleh and possibly Smart.

Watching the OKC game and watching Westbrook dominate as a big, strong, pure athlete, I can't help but think Smart is the one guy who could match him in those areas. Will Smart be as good as Westbrook - likely not, but he is the one guy who could compete physically with Westbrook. He could take Westbrook into the post and make him work. Defensively, he would never be overpowered physically by Westbrook. He's long enough and athletic enough to contest those pull up jumpers that make Westbrook so dangerous.

**** can't shoot the damn ball either. And Gordon is way more athletic.

Management says repeatedly that the "Best player Available" is the pick.
That said... team needs and positioning aside...
Which is truly the BPA?
Gordon, Randal, Smart or Vonleh?

Think it's too close to call for these four.
It will come down to personal choice and majority vote with Jazz.

If the Jazz think Vonleh can play some SF, he stands out. He's got the length, shooting touch, rebounding, and defensive potential. He's got a lot. Physically, he's a lot like Favors, and the Jazz love Favors.

Vonleh has a personality similar to Favors.
Both soft spoken and quiet.
Perhaps those two might become good friends and make each other better players.
Hopefully bring out some warrior type attitude.

Randle would bring the BEAST out of Favors.

Since the fifth pick seems to have no clear cut stand out player what about this idea.
Not saying it's a good idea to be clear.
What about trading #5 to Sixers for #10, #32, #39.
Jazz could get maybe McDermott who is shooter Jazz need plus a couple extra unguaranteed prospects.

Meh.

That way the Jazz can have 5 rookies in addition to the young core we are already complaining doesn't get enough time, all while not addressing our 1 biggest need, a go to player...

Jazz are in position to take who they think will be best of the "rest", not be left with who falls to them. That is a pretty good spot to be in. They also have a chance someone like Exum or Parker falls to them.

Hell no.

Hell, hell no. 5 spots is not worth a lousy 2nd round draft pick, even a good one.

I wish half the board would stop crying about #5. ****, we're gonna get a good player.

Yeah, but who's going to be the best? I could see them all busting/never getting to where we need them to get.

An interesting quote:

""We’re going to take the best available player," Jazz vice president of player personnel Walt Perrin said. "When you have a pick this high in the draft, you can’t mess around with need. You can address need later in the draft. So we’re going to look at who’s on the board, what they offer and take the best player available for the franchise.""

The two questions then...
1. Who really is the best of those players likely to be there at 5? (Some of you have much more knowledge about this topic than I so feel free to share.)
2. Is the drop from the 4 to 5 pick significant enough to give up an asset to move up a spot?

The answer to the first question is totally unclear. (I think most scout lean toward vonleh though)

The answer to question 2 is yes, imo, depending on what asset you are talking about.

For instance, I would give pick 5 and 23 to move up to 4 but i would not give 5 and one of our core players.

I'm quickly realizing that I don't want Gordon. I tend to not value athleticism as much as most. Give me LMA over Blake Griffin any day. Perimeter defense specialists can be had for cheaper-- or we can swing for one later on in the draft.

I'd rather draft a very sure bet at a 1st option on offense with our 5th pick, and I don't feel comfortable using it on Aaron Gordon.

Agreed... In many mock drafts I see Gordon slipping in the last week. He is in the 8-10 spots in many of them.
Randal and Vonleh are the most common 5 pick.
