What's new

***Official Ping Pong Day Thread - Tuesday - May 20th - 8 PM ET - ESPN***

I know we're angry we didn't land a top-3. But let's look at it this way - Parker doesn't play good defense, Embiid has the back of an old man, and Wiggins has the tenacity of Marvin Williams.

Plus we save some money drafting at 5 (a somewhat weak yet valid argument).

I wish we could draft Vonleh at PF. We can move Kanter or have him come off the bench.

Thanks for this....... but still

What a ****ty turn of events. The ONLY franchise changing players in this draft will be Parker, Wiggins, and Emblid. Last season was the best (and only) chance of tanking to get a franchise changing player to resurrect Jazz basketball. This next season is when we hire a real head coach, and play to win. Getting a #5 pick not only solidifies us as a mediocre treadmill team at best, but also reflects the complete failure of how to tank. ****

Look I wish we had traded Marvin early on and had a few more ping pong balls myself. But, I think the Cavs have shown that even with a string of #1 picks you aren't guaranteed anything.

Buck up folks. IMHO this is much more of a 5 man draft anyway. Vonleh is a very nice prospect. I'm not sure there is any drop off from Parker to Vonleh to be honest. And heck, we even have another 1st rounder to add to the team with. And with this deep draft we could get another good prospect.

It's not all doom and gloom.

Wish I didn't check in, then I would be disappointed and bothered tomorrow instead of tonight.

I had a feeling it would be this way so I shouldn't be... but am.

At least it wasn't the Lakers or Boston.

Vonleh is my pick. Jazz can still have four bigs as Vonleh would take time to develop. It was not ideal when Utah had Favors, Millsap, Jefferson and Kanter all vying for time, but it worked. Gobert and Vonleh would get the backup mins. behind Kanter and Favors. When all four are healthy, play the starters 30 mins and the backups 18 each. Of course, there are always injuries so average mins/game would be higher for all of them.

I agree that all the prospective picks have holes in their games, which might be a reason to consider trading the pick. Another thing to look at is who is displaced by the rookies these teams draft. Are there any deals to be made that way? Jazz have cap space and assets. Dennis Lindsey can be like Monte Hall..."let's make a deal."

Based on draft history, the chance that any of the top 4 becoming franchise players is very low. It is also likely that one or two of the top 2 are going to be a bust or at best serious under achievers.

Look at the top 5 of this draft, and please tell me which two will bust and why.

Drafts are not all one and the same.

If we draft Vonleh, then Kanter is gone. Who would we play at the 5 though? Favors mentioned that he prefers the 4.

Keep in mind 2005 was a 3 player draft basically, and the Jazz made something happen with the 6th overall pick. Trading up is a reasonable option IMO, especially seeing as the top 6 players in this draft could all have crazy workouts.

Why? There are 96 mins at the 4/5. That's 32 each if/when Vonleh is ready to be a starter. Good teams need a rotation of at least 3 bigs and a 4th developing in case of injuries. If Gobert develops into a force at the 5, fantastic! Then the Jazz have a nice problem and one of the bigs may fetch a great asset in return. It's the same if we draft Randle, or had drafted Embiid or Parker. The best will earn playing time, the worst will be traded.

Similar situation if Exum had been available or if Smart is the pick at #5...unless he can be a combo guard and Hayward moves to SF. Otherwise, Burke or Burks gets traded, depending on where Smart gets his minutes. About the only scenario that doesn't result in someone getting bumped is drafting A. Gordon as a SF. I like Vonleh, but wouldn't be opposed to the Jazz trading back a couple of spots to get Gordon and another asset. I think Gordon could be a combo forward and fill mins as the fourth big and at backup SF.

Now just use other assets to acquire a starting SF...unless Hayward can be that guy.

pretty sure i've recently been convinced there are 100 minutes at the 4/5.. so long as #Randle is playing ..

I'm quite fond of Gobert, personally. He was probably the only presence we had on our roster last season that seemed to really stop penetration competently. He moves well for a big-fella of his size. I'd really want to hang onto him for as long as possible.

I would rather trade one of our bigs, and fill those last 32 minutes with a stretch 4 + Gobert than keep three bigs in rotation

Tonight was obviously disappointing. Maybe we will be better in the end for it by picking a player that is being undervalued right now. The saving grace for us is that the Lakers and Celtics didn't jump into the top 3 ahead of us. Cleveland can go **** themselves though. I am so tired of them getting these top picks. I hope they screw it up.
