My apologies for forgetting that Utah threw BYU a bone and re-upped for 2013. However, as has already been covered in the above posts, there are some problems with finding a date to actually play the game.
Count me in as somebody who wouldn't be sad if the game went away all together. I was already on the fence with it, but this last game cemented my opinion. I've seen enough of the high tackles, alligator rolls, etc. with BYU. It seemed like everytime a Utah ball carrier was taken down, there were hands around the ankles as players came up from the pile. Lavelle coached teams never played that way. As has already been said, it's also gone way past the point of a good natured rivalry. Add to the fact that Utah has owned the recent series and there just doesn't seem to be enough reward to playing the game unless it was a conference match up.
Cougar fans take the company line that Utah nixing BYU from their schedule is something that they are doing out of fear. Fact of the matter is, even if they are replacing BYU with teams like Tulsa, Utah is in the midst of looking for games that open up recruiting pipelines in areas that currently aren't that strong. BYU and Utah do not need to play each other in order for either of them to have strong in-state recruiting abilities. With it's new conference affiliation, Utah is trying to nationalize the program a bit more which means trying to get into states like Oklahoma, a bigger presence in Texas, etc.
Of course, to any rational person, that makes sense. Just don't ask BYU fan. It's simply because Utah is afraid to play a team that they've beat 8 out of 11 years.
