Point Guard Contingency Plan - Summer of 2017

I like the idea of just giving Exum the reigns of the team if Hill is too much. He's healthy now and we need to see what we have with him in years 3 and 4. Look to a deep pg draft, FA and trades for possible backups for insurance at the position.

This is year 3.

I honestly can't believe that with only 30 teams in the NBA, and with new young rookies coming up each year, we're struggling to find a good/solid starting Point Guard in the NBA.

We need to give Exum the starting job in this situation. Let him free and play 30+ minutes a game and see what we got. He was a top-5 pick and a top-3 prospect in that draft by a lot of people. He's starting to play very well.

I like this. Bring in Deron as his backup. Dante with confidence is a whole different player and I think Deron could be a good mentor. It's a Cinderella story if it works out.

Ive said a couple times .....GHill goes for the MONEY than it's Dante's turn and let Burks back him up.Both theses guys will have a summer to get stronger and healthy. Dante is packing it in now on dunks ,he will be stronger next year.Burks will just be 26 and same ,a summer will get him a 100% too.I think a fully healthy Dante and Alex will offset GHill and all these 30 something year old PG's everyone is trying to stick Jazz with

I agree with this, and I think this pretty much summarizes a backup plan that most people on this forum would be happy with.

I'm curious to know which teams are interested in George Hill enough to pay him $132M? I've heard before that the Spurs/Hill are interested in each other, but can they afford to pay Hill that much?

The more i think about it the more paying George anything more than 18-20 million is insane. It'll completely hamper the roster management. I'd be far more comfortable with signing Deron, or trade for some mid level adequate type like Rubio or something like that which isn't too expensive and then make Exum take away the starting position if/when his play demands it.

So far I'm not seeing anything in this thread that is making me feel better about not getting the extension done.

Let's just hope Hill plays like he's wanting a max contract and finishes the season strong. I certainly don't feel like hes a max guy and it's more than likely his agent knows it also. He's just doing his job trying to maximize his value. The last few games I've wondered if maybe he was a bit of a flash in the pan to start the season.

So, what am I missing? Where is this "Hill is clearly the better player" stuff coming from?

Teague and Hill are very, very similar. Teague is younger and doesn't get hurt as much. Like I said earlier, if you have Teague, you are probably battling for the third seed right now.

I still say that Utah should have went after Teague.

Now, onto another subject, why would Gordon choose Utah over Boston? Especially if the Jazz resign an oft-injured and aging Hill or if Hill leaves?

If Gordon leaves, Utah is completely screwed...well, not completely, but they probably have to tank again. Hood and Favors and Burks aren't taking you anywhere. So, if Hayward leaves, do you sell the ship and tank again, hoping that Exum develops and you get a top pick that pans out before Gobert's extension is up and he bolts as well? IF that is the case, why not sell the farm now, before free agency and go after another All Star to convince Hayward to stay? Hayward, Gobert and another All Star is better than Hayward, Gobert, Hill, Favors, Hood, etc.

If Hill's market is that strong, maybe you look at signing him and trading him once it's time to put that cap space towards retaining other players. This way, you don't totally lose an asset.

If you pay Hill that much, he will become untradeable.

I'd see Philly giving him that much money. Their tanking years are over. They will make a push for the playoffs next year. Embiid is elite already. I read an article that Cousins is the only C in his stratosphere offensively and defensively only Gobert can dream of being as good as Embiid.

Embidd, Simmons, Saric is their core. They will look to add a veteran PG (Hill) and another big time player to their core. Their goal next year will be playoffs.
