Reasons you left the LDS church.

I have numerous friends and mission buddies leaving the LDS church. Most of it ranges from polygamy, issues with Joseph Smith, or blacks in the priesthood, etc. Just curious on what other people's experiences were like.

I use to pray as a kid, never feeling like I was getting a response. When i was 15-16 it finally dawned on me the reason I wasn't getting a response was because no one was there to answer.

Or maybe it was because I got tired of church ball and had no reason to go anymore.

It's one or the other, maybe both.

I don't believe there is a "true church" and that because I have joined this club instead of that club that I will gain access to better seats in The Luxury Box. To each their own, but I can't buy it.

I agree.

I'm also very much an active, believing member of the LDS church.

I was never really sold to begin with. In my young adult years I frequently acted as an apologist for the church despite being inactive, agnostic, and living my life without 'the gospel' being a factor in any decisions I made. However, my relation to the church took a steep dive when the church took a harsh and quizzical political stance on an issue of free will (gay marriage). Besides that it simply seemed wrong, it really seemed antithetical to everything I was taught about the church as an institution (that the church doesn't involve itself in politics) and the altruistic teachings (the most common narrative) of JC ('don't be an ******* and you're here living the life you want because I championed your ability to, even if there are consequences').

That distance only continues to grow.

But again, I never really bought into it. And this is also not exclusive to the LDS church.

I'm gay. My family is still really LDS, and they love me, and I love them.

Still sucks, though. It's a nice, warm feeling to believe in the church, but it gets cold once you're forced into the awkward situation of choosing love over celestial glory. Before I accepted the fact that I liked dudes, I always felt really guilty about thinking the church was illogical. Once I got over the fact that I'm a homo, I sort of realized that it's dumb to feel guilty about thinking logically.

Do what makes you happy. If being in the church is what makes you happy, keep on going. If you're not a fan, get outta there. Just don't live your life for other people.

This is a heartwarming thing to say, but members of the LDS church absolutely do not agree with YB85's post.

To agree with YB85's post, you would have to NOT believe in the Celestial, Terrestrial, and Telestial Kingdoms, along with the degrees of glory within the Kingdoms themselves. For example, to obtain the highest degree of Celestial glory, you must be married and sealed in an LDS temple.

So yeah, you do believe that your particular religion gets better seats in The Luxury Box.

This is something that Joseph Smith, who you believe to have spoken directly to God, said in D&C 132 verses 15 through 20. If you're still not convinced, go ahead and read verse 21.

21 Verily, verily, I say unto you, except ye abide my law ye cannot attain to this glory.

Agreed. I think the closer you are to the truth the better. But ultimately you have to accept God on his terms. I've never understood the do your own thing mentality when it comes to religion if you are religious. That's an atheist view.

Numberica is anti-LDS? What a surprise.
More anti-religious than anti-LDS. But it holds a special place in my heart and a much larger relevance in my day-to-day.

People are free to believe what they will, I have no intrinsic issue with that. When those beliefs seek to take rights away from others then I have a real problem. That happens to be most religions a fair percentage of the time.

Rule #1 when talking to people about religion is to ask them what they believe, not tell them what they believe.

Colton, thank you for leaving me a neg rep for stating my opinion. Glad to see that you're still irrational as ever.

Why is it irrational to neg rep a post which had very little to do with the topic of the thread and whose sole purpose was to slam my church?

I was raised LDS. I left because I do not see the relevance of religion in my life or choices. I'll be a good person and let the afterlife take care of itself.

Believing in religion to me is like believing in ghosts, aliens and magic.

That said I don't begrudge those who choose to believe in religion. Most of my family is still active members of the LDS religion. And my wife's family are all still active catholics. To each their own. Religion is just not for me.

I'm starting to see a pattern here. All the BYU haters also are anti-LDS. Hmmmm. Wonder if those are related at all.

Blacks? Polygamy? JS? Nobody that is LDS leaves for these reasons in this day and age.

This thread smells like a setup by the OP.

There is a 1000 + reasons for me. ill say this, I believe that Joseph Smith was out for power and the beginnings of the church were a lie. I also morally dont like the modern day version's beliefs, they bother me.

I am not sure the first thing that led me to leave the church. I know my wife initially left because the temple stuff bothered her a lot. I was bothered by how they assign your real name that god gave you in heaven. There was no inspiration just a process. People in the church always bothered me but I tried not to let that suede my decisions.

Oh and BYU has always been my second team next to Oregon and that will never change. I am a loyal fan. Ill change religions but I wont switch sports teams. Although I dont hate Utah so maybe I am not a real fan.
