What's new

Redemption Game: Utah Jazz @ Dallas Mavericks

I gotta remember that this is a young team, with a new coach, trying to fix all of their bad habits, in a new system, against really good teams.

This... its frustrating as hell, but you have to have a little perspective.

I'm going to give this team 10 games to see if it can straighten up and fly right. I know they've got a tough schedule, but that should be sufficient time to see if we have indeed made significant strides. If we can't win 3 games in that span I think there's definitely something wrong with the lineup or the approach and changes need to be made. Like a lot of folks, I've got my eye on Kanter as one of the biggest issues. The dude has seemed totally lost most of the time in the first two games. The Mavs would've probably beat almost anyone last night, but Dirk and Parsons were totally having their way.

I will say that I like what I see from Hood and, to a degree, from Exum. Hood will likely make quicker strides this year, but Exum shows more promise than I feel like he did (by-and-large) in preseason. Other than that, last night pretty much sucked, but it sucked more for Cavs fans. So there's that...

10 games is nothing, especially with our schedule over the first month. Our team is still a bunch of kids who haven't really been taught anything the past few years under coach Corbin.

I realize we now have Favors, Hayward & Burks signed.

Hayward is the 1st one who can opt out in 3 years.

Favors - 4 years

Burks 5 years(this year + 4 year extension)

I am still concerned that by the time this "core" gels , Hayward can leave on his own.

Where am I going with this -- I would try to trade Hayward if we could get what we feel is fair....

Not going to happen with his trade kicker. I can't remember who said it, but the 2016/17 season looks like it's the window that they're shooting for. As of right now, they have Exum, Burke, Burks, Hayward, Hood, Favors and Gobert all under contract for that season. Plus they have room for a Max free agent, a (likely) high pick in the 2015 draft and a ton of assets to make a move for a #1 option. By that point, either Hayward is back in the fold or Hood / draft pick / free agent steps into that role.

By the time Hayward's contract is done, we'll know if he's worth the money or not. I wouldn't stress about him leaving or staying.

Favors is averaging 16.5 pts, 9 rebs, 2 blks and 2 stls in his first two games. That's encouraging I guess. He's at least putting up Millsap numbers. I think he can average close to that going forward.

I think Derrick can put up better numbers if he plays aggressive, too many times he seems to disappear for stretches. He should be our primary or secondary offensive option.
